If it wasn't for the facts that BYU keeps the sabbath day holy they would be in the PAC 10 as well!.
The may be a short term bump, but I really don't think conference affiliation has much effect over the long haul. I think this is overstated.
If it wasn't for the facts that BYU limits academic freedom and hasn't accomplished anything athletically in 25 years they would be in the PAC 10 as well!.
It comes down to winning and even more so, bit wins. I have alot of Ute gear and really didn't need any more, but I had to get that Sugar Bowl shirt in NO. What fan wouldn't. If BYU goes to a BCS bowl, they will see a spike as well and even bigger if they win it. Just the way it works, kind of makes sence to me.
As for the PAC 10/12 impact, I think it will help a bit over the long haul, but again only if they win. Only because their wins will be noticed by a bigger audiance with the bigger confrence, but if they don't win, it wont matter at all.
Just win baby and the rest takes care of it self, true for any team, even Utah and BYU.
It just means that the local D.I. will be full of Ute gear in 3 years when they flounder in the pac-10 and the bandwagon fans jump back off.
Seriously does this author think people in California, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona are going buy Ute gear?
Where is the bump going to come from?

You mean like all the "Quest for Perfection" shirts that are at the AF and Provo stores? :)
Good point utahcountyute. But I'll bet you don't see any Spirit/Tradition/Honor shirts at the DI. That was one classy shirt! Sorry Cougs, even your football shirts are strange, not unlike the fans.
FACT: BYU is not an academic research institution. That is why the PAC is not interested. RUMOR: BYU is dropping athletics, not that anyone would notice. Or are they just in a minor league? FACT: Utah County is the home of minor league sports. Salt Lake County has the NBA, MLS, and a BCS university.

Given your statement regarding the Sabbath, what do you think BYU and "the collective" will do if the Big 12 finally relents and lets BYU join?
Finally...you continue to ignore RESEARCH!!!
Regardless of the Sunday issue, BYU is NOT PAC material. The University of Utah is the complete package.
BYU has a built in fanbase due to it's affiliation with the LDS church. the suggestion that BYU is going to drop athletics is laughable at how transparent the silliness of the idea really is. have you seen the facilities on campus? a stadium that seats 20k more than RES. BYU is the big dog in the utah market. the utes are a regional school with a regional following, BYU is a national school that fills stadiums wherever they play. that's why they are the team others "love to hate"...it hurts to come into your own stadium and have as many BYU fans there.
a Y shirt has become the international "code" for "mormon"...you see why flags down on the houseboats at lake powell all the time. it's a way of saying, "come by and borrow a cup of sugar, but leave the booze."
Let's see... How can I saw I love my team and hate the other this time???
Yes, I'll agree that the "Quest" shirt wasn't their best effort.
It it going to be very interesting to see how Utah does in the Pac.
In 5 years, will the fans be looking back on the move as the best thing that ever happened or the worst thing that ever happened to the U?
It should be a fun ride...
I am so tired of the 'research institution' heresy. If that was really one of the criteria for not letting BYU join one of the BCS antitrust clan then several of the current PAC 10 members would also be exempt. Get a grip. Sunday play, period.
As for merchandise money - built in clientele.
ds7:
An international code? I'm as LDS as they come & I've never known about this. Sorry, but I'll never fly the Y. Visitors to my boat with the U flag will just have to be disappointed when I don't offer them alcohol. I am always happy to share a caffeniated coke, however, and I even have a current temple recommend. But we're a liberal bunch in Sandy.
I've got to stop wasting time with this. But one final comment. Given all the good things about BYU (yes, I admit there are many), they're not in the same league with Utah when it comes to research grants (a quality medical school helps). However, Washington State isn't exactly know for research either & they're in the PAC. Maybe it's the Cougar factor?? The PAC 10 hasn't had great experience with their current Cougar team & they might have simply learned their lesson.
Runaway, Brave Sir Robin. Plant yourself, Spike.
BYU limits academic freedom? I suppose you've never tried to express a Mormon viewpoint in an Lit class at the U? See what happens if you show even the slightest bend of conservative thought in a Cal Berkley law course, and see what happens. You'll need an electronic clock to be quick enough to time how long it takes to go from an A to an E.
And you really think the Y has done nothing in the last 25 years athletically? Over the last quarter century BYU has 12 conference football titles alone. They have 85 championships in all sports just since the formation of the mountain west.
During the same time frame Utah has... four football championships and only 40 overall titles since joining the MWC.
The pUkes have accomplished less than half the success of BYU. You didn't even have a track facility until six months ago.
And please don't start with BCS crapola, we all know you can't decry it in December and use it to validate yourself in August.
Utah is in because BYU wouldn't sell out.
Period.
Bitterman: You are bitter. Take it easy man. BYU is OK, so is Utah. And yes, I had a lot of fun defending my religious viewpoints and conservative take during four years of "poly sci" classes. It was a great time and I don't think my grades suffered. Unless a professor is a complete idiot, they respect an articulate counter position. I havn't been to Cal Berkley, but my LDS friend practiced law there for many years after often voicing his opinion during Harvard Law classes, and he survived both environments just fine.
I clearly enjoyed my days at the U expressing my opinions.
Honestly I have nothing against BYU as a Ute fan. I think BYU fully deserves to be in a bigger conference just like Utah. I respect BYU and there great teams every year, they always put up an amazing fight against us and win alot. I hope that BYU can get out of the MWC, honestly it would be cool if they were in the PAC with us. Don't forget there are people that respect the rivalry we have. I have never had bad feelings twards my BYU friends or there team, it's all in good fun.
I hope people can get over the bitterness and see that both BYU and UTAH deserve AQ status. Go Utes!
@bitterzoob
"Utah is in because BYU wouldn't sell out. Period."
Ummm...FALSE!!!
byU was never asked to "sell out" b/c no one even wanted them. Utah is in b/c Utah earned it.
Deal with it ZOOBIE.
Go Utes!!!
