ya the jazz lose in the playoffs "EVERY YEAR" because they play the stinkin
lakers. so the question on how good sloan and oconnor are is if they have done
anything to challange the l.a. lakers. we made good changes this off season, but
it won`t be good enough. we need more strength in the middle.
Re Rick:Stay in NY. You do realize that the reason the Knicks have
been so horrible the last 15 years is because they went with your philosophy.
The Jazz are one of the best run franchises because they don’t panic and
cave into media pressure every time something goes wrong and fire everybody like
the Knicks do.On the court talent counts more than the coaching
staff and the truth is there has always been at least one team that is more
talented than the Jazz every year. Jerry is in the hall for a reason, all the
experts think he’s one of the best coaches in the league for a reason. You
just don’t get it because you know very little about the NBA.Most importantly, who is better than Jerry that the Jazz could actually get?
If you really want to make a good argument start naming names.
Franchises with titles:Lakers, Celtics, Rockets, Spurs, Sixers,
Knicks, Nets (ABA), Trailblazers, Thunder (Sonics), Heat, Bucks, Wizards
(Bullets), Warriors, Pistons, BullsFranchises without titles:Jazz, Mavericks, Nuggets, Hornets, Bobcats, Magic, Suns, Cavs,
Grizzlies, Pacers, Hawks, Clippers, Kings, T-Wolves, TorontoIt's
funny that even some of the worst franchises in the NBA today had their moments
to all you idiots that think Jerry is a good coach, wake up, finally ! I see
comments that are childish. Jerry always wins, or Jerry always makes the
playoffs..There's a saying here in N.Y. that goes like this, that and a token
will get you on the subway, get it...what really counts is what does he do come
playoff time (nothing) ?????? JERRY LOSES EVERY YEAR; GET IT ? So many good
N.F.L. coaches have been fired during the past few decades because they can
NEVER win come playoff time...During the regular season, they'll win their
division (ex. a few yrs. ago, S.D.), BUT LOSS IN THE FIRST ROUND ! Those coaches
are fired just like sloan should be....sloan was fired in the windy city & the
same should happen here; too bad it doesn't & until it happens, the JAZZ will
NEVER even get to the W.C.F.'s !!! The guy could barely make it up to the podium
(H.O.F. nite) & could hardly speak. The speach it self was another disaster, one
he probably gives at halftime during a plyoff game (puts players to sleep) !!!!!
WAKE UP sloan bandwagoners.
RE: Basketballogy | 11:12 a.mNeed I remind you all thos PFs are
6'11 or 7 foot tall, and premier bigmen, even 1st team NBA players, and you don't get premier bigmen without drafting them, or making big trades
that the jazz seem unable to make.and those teams did not build
around 6'8" power forwards.and they all realized they needed, in
addition, oustanding SGs ans SFs to win, how conventinetly you
failed to mention kobe manu, peirce, ray allen, among others, were also on
those teams, and by the way the jazz could have drafted
parker and rondo but didn't.And the fact remains sloan does NOT
run plays for 2 and 3 positions, they are simply after thoughts in
the offense,no wonder true stars in those positions do not want
come here, or want to leave, or not developed here.
Both should've been fired and replaced by Isiah Thomas. Inexcusable that we
made no effort to sign LeBron & DWade or trade for Dwight Howard.
True Fan : Good points. I feel Sloan is every bit as good a coach as Jackson.
If Sloan had coached the same players Phil Jackson has coached, he would have
won more then his share of titles as well. The Zen master has had things handed
to him on a silver platter like few coaches ever have. Jerry Sloan
embodies the whole Jazz organization and what they represent. It will be a very
gloomy day in Jazz history indeed, when Jerry decides to retire, and go plow
fields with this tractors on a full time basis. He will be missed even more then
Stockton and Malone, and Larry Miller. There is no other coach I can think of
quite like him. No other coach could command the same amount of respect from his
player, save possibly Pop in San Antonio, and Jackson in L.A.
I don't believe replacing Jerry Sloan makes the Jazz suddenly contenders. Once
he's gone, people will talk about the success the Jazz had with Sloan.
I am ok with this, Sloan has a unique team oriented system that the rest of the
NBA respects. Probably not the most pleasant guy to play for and a bit too
negative on the team but overall he is a good coach. I respect the loyalty the
Millers have and I really hope some day it will be rewarded in a championship.
The Jazz have an identity, you can't say that about most of the other NBA
teams.I don't have good vibes on their pick of Hayward, time will tell and
hopefully he will be a pleasant surprise. I wish Korver would have stayed, he
was a unique player that should have played more. Go Jazz, fan always.
I read what you up there say about KOC and Jerry and I just scratch my head.
You seriously do not know how good you have it. Jerry is an excellent coach
that gets the most out of the talent he does have. Who seriously would you
rather have coach that Jazz other than Phil? You act like good coaches are as
easy to come by as Dominate Centers. If you think its that easy - well then
just ask Denver how effective Adrian was in the playoffs. Jerry just flat out
@JazzsmackPeople tend to be down on things they're not up on. If you think Jerry Sloan's system is outdated and depends on point
guards and power forwards...Then clearly you have no IDEA what
Sloan's system is. The Flex offense is one of the most popular
offenses used in basketball today -- especially by colleges. For example, Mark
Few, head coach at Gonzaga, has even written a book on it. Because
Sloan's so-called "outdated system" is so popular TODAY, it is extremely easy
for young players to pick up and be productive in, given that they've probably
played in it before. This system has absolutely NO preference for
point guards and power forwards. In fact, the opposite is true: players are
interchangeable. Consequently, if you have a center that can shoot
3s (like Okur), or a point guard (like Williams), the system works for that.So the system allows a dominate point guard, and a dominate power
forward, to dominate if they can. BTW: Recent NBA champions with
exceptional power forwards and point guards:Spurs (Tony Parker, Tim
Duncan)Celtics (Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett)Lakers (Derek Fisher, Pau
How important is it to have a good coach? I don't know, lets ask Bulls fans. How
have things been since Phil left? What has Phil done since? To the idiots that
complain about Sloan, just stop watching and let us real Jazz fans do our part
in supporting a great franchise and team. GO JAZZ!!
There is a growing list of players and coaches who have never won NBA
championships simply because they had the bad luck to play in the Phil Jackson
era.Just as I do not think of Karl Malone, John Stockton, Steve
Nash, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller, etc. as losers, neither do I consider Jerry
Sloan as one.But I would be open to considering people who refuse to
acknowledge reality for that title. ;-)Seriously though, people see
only what they have predisposed themselves to see are really missing the
boat.In Sloan's 22 years as coach of the Jazz, he’s only
missed the playoffs three times.Jerry Sloan has a career winning
percentage of .603, has had TWO losing seasons in 22 years of coaching, and a
run of 15 straight playoff appearances. What part of THAT resume
signals incompetence? (continued)
Jerry da man, miles to dleague, kevin horrible, trade williams, sign boozer
Julianne, if you new the history of the Jazz better you would know that the Jazz
have been able to attract the talent they have had over the years largely
because of coach Sloan. Most of the players have roots back in the large cities
of the East and West coasts, and are not that excited to play in a small market
like SLC. The good players that do come here always say that they want to play
here because of Sloan and the overall quality of the Jazz organization. Without
that, we would be lucky to even sniff a great player in this state.
The Jazz will never win a NBA championship if they keep Sloan. He was a good
player but he as been a very bad coach. He doesn't know how to coach. I don't
understand how the Miller and upper management can not see that he's doing a
terrible coaching job. Because of that, it is why all the good plays are going
to other teams. Welcome Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver to the Chicago Bulls. GO
To all those who like to bash KOC and the FO of the Jazz you need to read how
the Jazz management is rated 4th in the league, with SA 1st and Popovich says
they have patterned themselves after the Jazz and how they run their team.I'm glad they gave KOC an extension, he has done a good job. As far as
Sloan is concerned, I can take him or leave him, he is a HOF coach and will
continue to win but I would like to see a new coach with some different
philosophies. My biggest complaints about Sloan is his refusal to use the 3 pt
shot more as a weapon in his offense and the way he handles young players (with
the exception of hustle players (mathews/milsap)). His negative reinforcement
style causes young players to struggle with confidence.
I would like to see the Jazz give Jerry a new 5 year contract. He is the
greatest coach in the sports industry today. I like the Jazz to win it all this
@LKA i believe auggie got an invite yesterday, i read that somewhere. glad to
hear it too, he's a tough player
Whats that Jazzsmack article all about, from the grammar to the comment
mentality? Is this what is either getting an education, or recently recieved one
is a result of, and what we can look forward to from this "now generation" in
the future? Wow!
the jazz could NEVER get over the hump for whatever reason with sloan at the
helm...Its been 20 some years, you'd think Greg Miller would have common sense &
send him to the farm who has stated many times, there are alot more things in
life important than basketball..WE ALL KNOW THIS GURU COACH, BUT KEEP IT TO
YOURSELF & LET THE PLAYERS FIND THIS OUT WHEN THEY GET OLDER & WISER ! If a
player hears this from his coach, what type of effort do you think you'll get
from the kid ????? I would bet that you never heard those words out of phil
jackson's mouth to his players; wake up jerry ! retire & do all Utonians a great
favor & start collecting social security & join AARP & relax on your farm &
watch the Jazz games from Ill.,PLEASE. Selfish guy wants to break the all times
win total for a coach..That will be harder now that Nellie is coming back as
well; too bad...Utah will be "stuck" with this broken down coach who can barely
raise his voice for another "three" years to come close to breraking win total
for a coach;very sad for the organization.
KOC did some good things this offseason. Not so much with the Jefferson and
Bell acquisitions but he did good with not resigining Korver, and trading
Koufos. The Jazz have too many projects on the go ie Gaines, Jeffers, Fes,
Price, already and to keep those other two would have made coaching a 20 man
job.Sloan should do better this season as he has as good a PF as
there is in the league, although the defense he plays is at least suspect. He
also has a great PG but the team is really shallow behind Williams at PG.
Currently they have nobody that can come in and be effective running the team
when Deron sits.Sloan and KOC still have their work in front of them
this season. KOC has to decide what to do with AK and Sloan has to teach
Jefferson to pass and defend as well as deal with backup PG situation.
I have had a few criticisms of Sloan in the past, such as (1) frequently, he has
selected a talented but less-hard-working player to put in his "doghouse" during
the season, whom he has refused to play in favor of less-talented players, to
the apparent detriment of the team, (2) in certain years, his dogmatic
substitution pattern of clearing the bench in the second quarter has put the
Jazz in such a hole at the end of the half that the team was not able to
recover, (3) at times his overall in-game strategy and substitution patterns
have been puzzling. However, in the past 5 years, I have noticed fewer issues.
Despite the few criticisms I have had, I have always believed his strengths have
far outweighed any weaknesses. I especially like the tough attitude that he
seems to imbue into his players and teams. Even today, at over age 65, I bet
there is not one player on the team that would dare to challenge him to a fist
fight. I also like the way he is able to "work" the referees--who seldom give
Jazz teams the "star" treatment teams like LA routinely receive.
Jazzsmack, did you know that through coach Sloans entire 20+ years of coaching
the Jazz there have been only 7 teams that have won the championship? The list
includes Detroit, Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Miami, and Boston.
That leaves about 23 other teams like the Jazz that have not won so in your mind
I guess most of the coaches in the league should be fired!! I would guess you're
like most Sloan haters and never even played high school basketball so I don't
think you're real qualified to tell the Jazz organization what they need to do
to win a championship!!
@ Viva Los JazzYes, i also would love to see the Jazz win a
championship with Sloan at the helm. Then again i would love to see
the an end to war, poverty and inequality right throughout the entire world - by
the end of this year. Can you see where i'm going?
LONG LIVE JURRY!
reading the jumbled post of jazzsmack, i had the feeling he hated the fact that
the jazz are a consistently good team. he seems to feel that it's a mistake to
be always playing in the playoffs. i guess if it was up to him, the jazz will be
tanking a few seasons so we can draft high in the lottery for several years.
isn't that what portland does? and they do get high lottery picks. and yet, the
jazz still achieve more year after year than the blazers. dang, the blazers even
covet our scrubs and second rounders! lol
@jazzsmack - I think MJ, Kobe, and Duncan have more to do with the Jazz not
winning it all than anything coach Sloan or KOC could do!For a small
market team, the Jazz really should be pleased with what these two have been
able to do.
I was concerned that we drafted Hayward since we have a log jam at shooting
forward. I thought we could have gotten a decent big man like Ruben Patterson
or Ed Davis. But Kevin has done really well by departing with Kosta Koufos, who
seldom challenge anyone's shot or dunk attempts. He brought in a low post
presence in Al Jefferson who we're all getting excited to see play. He deserves
the extension and Jerry deserves to coach the Jazz so long as they keep
advancing in the playoffs. I would love to see him get a championship before he
leaves the NBA.
This article could be titled Loyalty. Something that pro sports has little to
none of in today's world. We have been spoiled to have had Sloan for so many
Houdini, CJ better break through this year, after reading all summer how people
think he has turned the corner. If he gets off to a slow start there
is possible trade bait we can get something worthwhile.Meanwhile O
connor Specialty is getting undrafted FAs to contribute so the Rider player I am
interested to check out
@ Jazzsmack... i guess you won't be watching the jazz now right?
I could care less about all the wannabees the family coming on here now all
elated.SLoan, the Sloanaholics and KevieAsk If I care
about ANY OF THEM?I will try to focus on "on court issues"Go
Jazzsmack, could you have constructed your comment any worse? I mean, seriously.
@jazzsmack: I think hence is what lays eggs..
YOu talk all want about Slaon and occonor, but they are also
the reason the jazz have never won a championship. They reason
they can not get the players they need to win a championship,
particularly blame sloan, for his outdated system, a
system that depends on a pg and pf, while championship teams are
winning with sgs, sfs, and centers.for year after of
overachieving with lesser talent denying the jazz a shot at better players and
real chance at a championship. hence 22 years and no
championship, all oconnor did was just maintain the team, no meaningful offseason improvenment, which will soon be
proved by the jazz getting the same results of the last several years.you can not win champoinships by loading your team with second
rounders, and bad mid to late first rounders,
trying to hold on to this rather than embracing change is just plain crazy.
Hall of fame Coach, and KOC should get GM of the year. Keep up the good work! GO
For all you Sloan, and KOC haters sit back in your easy chair for a longer ride.
Looks like your hopes of having them fired went on deaf ears. I think they are
much better than most so welcome back. Now go sigh Auggie for vetrans camp.
