great- one of my favorite NFL teams, and now they're doomed again to another pitiful season.
Not many NFL players would take a voluntary pay cut to stay with a team where they hadn't performed well. You really have to have a lot of respect for Alex and he certainly deserves the praise he is getting from his coach. I look for good things from San Francisco this year.
Wyoming Cougar, now there's a man in conflict! At least you don't have John Beck backing him up.
Pac 12.
I'm a 9ers fan too. Too bad they didn't draft Max Hall. They could be Superbowl contenders. Haha zoobs. They don't know anything about the NFL. San Fran is predicted to have a great season with Alex Smith. Can't wait to watch.
LOL, this is great. BYU articles 64 comments primarily from BYU haters. Actual article about a successful Utah grad in the NFL....6.
More BYU haters than Utah fans.
@jazzbball:
Maybe Utah fans like to spend time with their families instead of wasting their time on message boards. Yes, there are a few select ute fans that like to stir the pot and watch all you byu fans go into a defensive frenzy. But the majority of us have lives that prevent us from reaching such impressive amounts of comments on your home newspaper. Congrats on your mythical comment board championship.
Go Utes. Go PAC 12. Go Alex Smith.
I think Alex has just been stuck in a terrible offense his entire nfl career. I still look forward to watching him have an amazing career as the 49ers continue their rise back to prominence.
Make us proud Alex - utes4life
Alex Smith, over his career, will be a good NFL QB. He is a good person too, which makes him successful in life.
All you zoobs who slam on him are just haters. Alex Smith, in his short career so far, has FAR outproduced any QB from the zoo since Young. The zoo is supposed to be the QB factory, but you have to go back to 83 to get the last QB who even really played a significant amount of time on a team. Even that QB was coached to his greatest successes by a UTE!
Go Alex - have a great year. The Utes sure will and the zoobs can't stand it!
B-u-s-t.
Will be great to see Alex perform at his potential. I am a Cowboy fan and will cheering for the 49ers
Go Alex!
Go Utes!
I hope it happens for Smith...
Sad how this turns into a BYU-Utah petty trading of barbs.

As a huge 49er fan you have no clue. As much as Alex is underperfoed he isn't the reason why we have stunk. If you want failure just look over the bridge and you'll see the difference.
Go 49ers!!!
Yawn...yet another year of hype for the former #1 draft bust. Shouldn't #1 have been successful long before now? Come on Alex - get the 49ers back to where Joe Montana once got them and Steve Young kept them.
Voluntary pay cut huh Henry? That's a good one. I'll bet his "voluntary" (wink, wink) pay cut was just like Richard Nixon's "voluntary" resignation. Smith wasn't earning a drop in the bucket that he was being paid. The writing was on the wall. Voluntary pay cut my rear.
As a huge BYU fan I've been rooting for Alex for years. I was thrilled to see him have some great games last year and I hope he can carry it over this year. Would love to see Smith carry on Steve Young's legacy of great San Fran quarterbacks.
Smith is in line to have a very solid year in San Fran. He developed a good relationship with Davis last year, and Crabtree should be better. Plus drafting O-Line twice early in the draft will help in pass protection, and open some holes for Gore. If everyone can stay healthy, they should win the NFC West this year.
And to the bitter/jealous Cougar fans, when was the last time a BYU graduate starting a game at QB in the NFL? "QuarterBack U" hasn't had an ex-QB start in what about 20 years or so?
Well it's back to the cellar for the 9ers!
I am one BYU fan (or "Zoob" or "TDS fan", if that is what you want to call me, it doesn't bother me, but I will still just call you a "Ute fan") who hopes and thinks that Alex Smith will do well this year and in years to come. I have been a 49ers fans since Steve Young was there, and I actually cheered for Alex Smith in every game but one in the year he busted the BCS with the Utes. So I have my reasons to cheer for him now. Go Alex! Go 49ers!
Great person...great QB...started slow at Utah, then took us a long way...my guess is started slow at SF and will be great there as well. I am not sure if he will be as great as Steve Young, but I am not sure he will ever have the supporting cast Young had.
Good story about a classy player.
