How many of us said that keeping the building and moving it was a BAD idea in the first place?!?!?!? This is just icing on that cake...more mismanagement of money where it just plain wasn't necessary. Sometimes it makes sense to keep our history in tact, but saving a building by moving it, and now obviously a building no one wants or cares about, points to lack of foresight and planning. Shame on you all!
Has this building been designated as an historic asset? If so, the restrictions on its permissible use could be one reason for the lack of interest.
Maybe they didn't get more bids because we are still in a recession, and businesses don't have the money to buy up a new building.
Who can afford a $7 million building these days.
The best option would have been to just dismantle the facade and rebuild it on a new structure.
Yes, the historic back-end of the building would have been lost, but a new building -with modern structure and mechanicals- would have been more desirable to a developer/tenant.
That is what happened with the Brook's Arcade on the corner of 300 S and State. They even added a level on the top for condos.
