Very misleading and disingenuous article. Putting legal and illegal immigrants together to make everything look so nice and innocuous.
Of course legal immigrants are paying taxes and starting businesses and contribution to our society. All of there contributions should not be listed as contributions for illegal immigrants.
They do the same thing when looking at crime rates. The D-News should be ashamed for printing propaganda like this.
I don't think anyone thinks all illegals are worthless and of no benefit to our economy. But it is not fair they come in on a free ride. They must pay a penalty. Once that is paid then they should have a visa for 5 years leading to citizenship. In the meantime liberalize legal immigration and expedite scientists and relatives of those here and becoming citizens. No admittance to those with tuberculosis, HIV and other communicable diseases. The border must be tightened up. I hate the thought of a suitcase nuke sneaking in.
Can anyone out there explain to me the difference between "illegal" and "legal?" I'm asking because there still seems to be confusion as to those definitions. Leeeeegal and illlllllegal, there is a difference I think. Or am I wrong?
What do legal immigrants have to do with illegal immigrants? It's not the same thing at all. Legal immigrants should be upset that Deseret News sees them as the same. They waited their turn and did it right but the Deseret News doesn't acknowledge that.
Yes, immigrants definitely help the economy in many aspects. Too bad they grouped the ILLEGAL immigrants with this data. I would be interested to see FACTS on ILLEGAL immigration statistics and how much it is truly "helping" our economy.
I agree. The continued grouping of illegal aliens with Legal immigrants is insulting.
These "studies" do not account for the human suffering brought about by Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling.
These "studies" do not account for the loss of a Child's identity. And for the loss of life of our citizens.
Well put, mkSdd3. This "study" is worthless and extremely misleading on its face.
A) "...immigrants (legal and illegal) make up 8.3 percent of the state's population". You can't lump them in together on this issue - the numbers MUST be separated.
B) "...looking at all Utah Latinos and Asians (both immigrants and native-born)...they wield $7.5 billion in consumer purchasing power." Again, irrelevant, since the sole issue is ILLEGAL immigration, not immigration as a whole. Disregard.
C) "At a time of economic recession, Utah can ill-afford to alienate such a critical component of its labor force, tax base and business community... Rather than scaring immigrants, we need to dig down deep to understand..." Why?! We must ignore our laws, our sovereignty, and our security simply for economic expediency and so immigrants can feel better about themselves? NO!
Immigration is fine, when legally transpired and when all laws are adhered to. Virtually everybody who is up in arms on this issue is concerned with the ILLEGAL immigration aspect, and the impact it has on our society, on our economy, and on our security.
We are a nation of laws, and should not forget that.
What a ridiculous article. Seeking to validate the positions of illegal aliens with legal immigrants. Illegal aliens/undocumented workers are not immigrants. I am so tired of the rhetoric trying to confuse the issue, and the public at large, that immigrants and illegal aliens are one and the same and their contributions, if any, are also the same.
Look outside.
Duh.
Lumping the legal with the illegal doesn't make the illegal any less guilty of criminal conduct.
Well how much would you save, if you don't pay for their medical, their food stamps, etc etc etc. What part of illegal doesn't this writer understand? If they want to come to this country, then do it legally, most of them (illegals) just want to be here and suck off the system.. send their money home to Mexico, and if you ask them if they want to become American citizens they laugh and say no. This country has been supporting a corrupt country for decades. It is time to stop the insanity. STOP!
I wonder if the Immigration Policy Center is completely agenda free on this topic.
I wonder if they would have published their study if it turned out to show that Illegal Immigrants ARE a drain on Government Services.
I wonder if the findings they WANTED to find influenced the study at all.
But you never know. Maybe illegal aliens ARE a blessing to all of us and they ADD more to our society than they take. You never know!
Lee Davidson, you have no idea of the realities of illegal immigration. Your lack of knowledge on the issue only helps support the anti-illegal position. Do you really think you will change the majority of patriotic Americans with your biased distortions of the truth?
Utah spends millions upon millions on illegal immigrants. There is no net advantage to Illegal immigration. Anyone who tries to say otherwise is not telling the whole truth. Remember its the whole truth and nothing but the truth, something open border supporters conveniently forget to tell.
When will the LAMESTREAM media stop coddling criminals?
Try as they might to put every sort of "positive spin" on the illegal aliens, we, the CITIZENS (and taxpayers, by the way)would like to see:
jobs returned to citizens
an end to freeloading.
Most of all, we just WANT THE LAW ENFORCED! Thats what civilized nations do!
Please read the initial data: "if all unauthorized immigrants were removed from Utah, the state would lose $2.3 billion in economic activity, $1 billion in gross state product and approximately 14,219 jobs."
It is nice to ignore what doesn't support one's position and claim that all the data mingles illegal with legal.
Yes illegal aliens help us all out of tax dollars, health care dollars, and education dollars to say nothing of the costs of the crime they commit and the costs of incarceration. The DN is working overtime these days to make sure their amnesty agenda is front and center every day. In case you haven't noticed, the DN is now a news media with a clear agenda, illegal alien amnesty no matter what it costs it's readers or the nation.
You people are right, let's enforce the law, and deport ALL of the illegal immigrants RIGHT NOW!
By the way, in case you missed it, doing so will cost Utah $2.3 billion in economic activity, $1 billion in gross state product and approximately 14,219 jobs.
But hey, we won't have to worry about all those nasty illegals, so we won't miss that money or those jobs, right?
Oh, and all those deportations would have to be paid for somehow, right? Since ICE's budget is $5.7 billion, and they deported 400,000 people last year, deporting all 12 million would cost about 30 times that, or about $170 billion. That's nearly $600 for every man, woman and child in the country. So, as soon as you ante up your $600, you can insist on complete enforcement. Until then, zip it.
Come, on, Lee. Of course immigrants are extremely important to the economic, and cultural future of America. Stop putting up this straw man argument.
I would like a way to keep those who are here. We need them... that's why they came and stay. Ever try to hire an Anglo to do cement work? Few if any takers.
But, the US government continues to be derelict in their duty to protect our borders and logically allow immigration that we need.
Step 1 -- secure the borders.
Step 2 -- provide a trigger that once certain benchmarks are attained in sealing the borders, then automatically a guest worker program, limited amnesty will take place.
Yes, I'm for some sort of amnesty. You can't rip an illegal father away from his legal wife and child. But, we can make them pay a fine and get a green card so they're legal. Is that fair to the other waiting... heck no, but it is reality. Deal with reality but... first secure the borders so no others are encouraged to enter.
It really isn't that difficult.
RE: cynic | 5:39 p.m
Those numbers are based on faulty assumptions.
out of over 2 million people in utah, do we not have the enough unemployed to fill those 14,219 jobs?
we certainly do.
when the assumptions are false, the outcomes must be false as well.
there is no job that someone here will not fill,
and theer will be migrant work programs, that those "illegals" will be able to fill LEGALLY.
ANYONE who supports illegal immigration supports labor abuse, slave wages, the existance of a "slave" class, and so forth,
and they should be ashamed of themselves.
