Wow! I didn't know the insurance companies were so racist. Isn't it against the law for them to deny insurance coverage to someone based on race? This is outrageous.
Health care is not a priority in Utah. Not one of our federal Congressional delegation voted for it last March.
To Casey:
This has nothing to do with the insurance companies being racist. It is almost entirely an economic and demographic issue.
And we should stop pretending that it is the government's responsibility to get everyone health insurance (and food, and housing, and heat/lights, and tranportation, and a job, etc., etc., etc.) It is every individual's responsibility to get as much education as they can, including giving up buying cell phones, vacations, cars/trucks, mountain bikes and all the other goodies to do so. It is YOUR responsibility to feed and take care of your family! So do it!
With the Obama health care plan, soon everyone will have health coverage.
This is a good thing isn't it? Do we really want a society where some get it and some don't?
If you say thats okay, let me ask you this, you already have health coverage don't you?

Even if everyone got a doctorate degree, there wouldn't be enough jobs for people with doctorates, some people would still have to be the janitors, the waitresses, the laborers, and work for small businesses that don't (until Obama health care) provide health insurance.
The reason not all Americans have health insurance is not a lack of education, its that there are not enough jobs that provide it.
I really wish people like you would stop to think things through, and stop parrioting what you hear from others ... without thinking.
And stop having kids if you aren't going to get the education to get the job that gets the health insurance. I'm tired of buying schools for people with excessive kids. Two is the limit, if you have more then you pay extra and no tax exemptions.
So who is paying when they go to the er? Me
Utah, of all states, should be ashamed of this report. This is a state that was built on Mormon values;that is, to care for one another. People who work in lower salaried positions, doing necessary labor, have always suffered the most.Blacks are still considered second class citizens and Hispanics, well they just started to get on the 'band wagon'so they will come in last.
Some of the worst people to work for are LDS. Notice I said SOME. Man gets hungry for power and money and forgets from whence he came, and so doesn't want to put out the money to offer health insurance. Now ,with the economy in jeopardy, more people will be struggling, and don't say "so who is paying when they go to the er",because the next struggler could be you; or me.
Please don't say, especially in Utah, to stop having children! Where would YOU be if your parents felt that way???
I suspect that being able to consecrate for the welfare of all humans is a long way off.Hopefully, the dept. of health will work things out and come up a winner to give aid to everyone.
And we're supposed to care... why? Granted, there are a lot of Hispanics here legally, but I think it's safe to say the majority are illegal aliens. Oh no! The illegal aliens don't have insurance. The injustice of it all! Please.
Cwolf: And we're supposed to care... why?
Nope, you should care, but that's your character disorder and hopefully you can work thru that some day.
Cwolf: Granted, there are a lot of Hispanics here legally, but I think it's safe to say the majority are illegal aliens.
Just because you write it down, doesn't make it so.
A lot of minorities don't have insurance because it isn't a priority. Culturally they've never had it--their parents never had it--their parent's parents didn't have either. No one taught them the prudence of such a thing. It isn't part of the subculture.
The question is whether we impose our cultural values upon them--or let them continue to live in their current ignorant one that doesn't pay for such things and expects others to fix the problem.
Each culture may expect certain things out of life and paying for health insurance may not be in their mind set.
And there are many young people who are healthy and don't see the need of expensive health insurance that they don't think they will need. They put their money in other places.
People who need help will get it. No one can be turned away from a hospital for not having insurance. It's because of this that health costs are soaring.
Should the state pay for some people's premiums and not others? Eventually, we all end up paying for it.
Not a problem. Pretty soon it will be illegal for anyone not to have insurance, and the IRS will enforce the law.
I am sure that everyone will obey the health insurance mandate then, right?
Of course, some people may chose to ignore that law, and we know that ignoring laws is perfectly acceptable in American today. Let's just call them "undocumented patients."
"undocumented patients."
LOL!
This report proves that an employer based insurance system is unfair.
We should be focused on that problem.
Instead, we're stuck with Obamacare.
Think about what you said, rabies."A lot of minorities don't have insurance because it's not a priorty" ? First, they are not the minority, whites are. While these people used herbs, etc., for millenia to help with minor ailments, taught to them by their parents, and their parents, parents, Europeans, posibly your parents, their parents, parents, came over on ships bringing diseases and guess what, no health insurance! But wait! Now many European countries have health care similar to what Pres. Obama has proposed-and white congress passed; not the so-called minorities.
A few,but not all, minorities have good paying jobs and before you jump on that, remember education wasn't afforded to 'minorities' until fairly recently. So count your blessings 'cause 'the shoe could be on the other foot'. Did that go over your head? Ask a 'minority' to explain it to you.
Read people, study, learn! And try to give respect to the office held, and refer to our president as president, whether it's Obama, Bush, Washington,or whomever.
Makes me wonder what they're teaching in the schools today! I suspect people from other countries think we're a bunch of idiots!
"The state has a lot of work to do to implement health reform," Nehring said. "The state doesn't do a very good job of outreaching to our minority populations about public programs like Medicaid and CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program)." - Article
How many Hispanics are uninsured by choice??? Our firm consults with dozens of employers that employ Hispanic workers and offer them subsidized benefits just like every other employee. Very few if any sign up for medical insurance - not based on affordability but on how the system works. If someone signs up for insurance they pay a portion of the premium and then are asked to pay a $250 - $500 co-pay when they present themselves at the ER (which is where many Hispanics access medical care.) Conversely, if they don’t have insurance they don’t share in the premiums, they don’t pay a fee at the ER, they are never taken to collection — thus their health care is free! They are acting like rational consumers, can you blame them?
Of course they don't. At least in AZ, they rely on AHCCCS and other government programs--free to them, expensive to us taxpayers. In addition, many of them work for cash, under the table, and therefore, no benefits.
We raised a large family and half the time, we didn't have health insurance. We learned a lot about healthy eating, self-care of minor injuries and illnesses, and we didn't go to the ER for every little thing. We even paid a good midwife $500 rather than spending 10,000 or more at the hospital.
We did have a few disasters--and we used savings and took time to pay. Now we choose to pay a significant portion of our limited income for insurance.
But I still believe that people have a right to choose to be insured--saving for emergencies may be oldfashioned, but it's still wise. And if you choose not to be insured when you can afford it, you have no right to expect others to pay for your medical care. There are programs to help those who are truly needy. If they weren't being bankrupted serving non-citizens.
