I can't think of anything more humbling than to have to tell my wife and kids that we're homeless. I can't help but think of how most of us are an accident or some tragic event away from the same situation

Reply: At Family Promise, the fears over security, regular meals, warmth and a place to sleep, use the bathroom and shower have subsided in a quick fix. This is nice for a few people, but what about all the other's out there as well ?. In Salt Lake City, the Family Promise program typically hosts four families at a time throughout the year. The families stay at participating churches for a week at a time, usually in Sunday School rooms that have temporarily been converted into private bedrooms. Partnering churches also provide 50-60 volunteers a week to help with meals and classes. When families graduate the typical stay is 37 days another family takes their place.

It is time that those so full of compassion for those who disrespect and willfully break our immigration laws start having a smidgen of compassion for the Brown family and the countless other Americans like them.

All this is happening to the american people as illegal foreign nationals are rewarded by the DWS with stolen identities and $30,000 a year in food stamps plus other subsidies in housing, health care, and child care.

There is no justification of the DWS being racists to favor mexicans and rewarding illegal aliens. Billions of dollars a year to illegal welfare, that's criminal.

With due respect to this family and so many others in need, I couldn't help but wonder why the Title of this article mentioned "as the recession deepens", and again made reference to the deeping recession in the article. Is this reality, or the author and Editor's perspective/political positioning? We all have the internet, and I just googled "recession" - finding thousands of articles quoting the recession is over, ending, and/or on its way to a double dip.
From my take on things, I'm a bit more optimistic. Stock's recovered greatly in 2009, this week had good news in housing sales, the unemployement rate has dipped slightly, (Utah was 7.8% in Feb, now 7.3% in June) and talk of not renewing the Tax cuts seemed to signal strength in the economy, and notified the world of our desire to get our debt reduced, albeit slightly.
I hope this family and others find work, and have health care they need. I work and pay taxes so that all in our country can be educated and contribute to a better society. Let's be optimistic and bring manufacturing back to the US!

anti-liar you are so right!
In the richest nation in the world, there should be enough public means to help people like the Browns until they get on their feet. Instead, the monies are given to people that broke the law to come to this country, lie to get welfare, ruin our schools and health care systems and don't give a toot about our country! What a shame!

I hate when people turn these type of stories in to a political debate but Republicans have no incentive to help get this economy going until after they win majority of the seats in congress. They will put party above country and democrats do the same thing when they are in the same situation.

The issue at hand is the stimilus has not been totally spent on good job creation jobs and it may not be big enoungh. The economy is in a money supply contraction. Only two enities can legally create money out of thin air, banks and the government. Since banks will not lend to people who do not have jobs it will start a contraction of the money supply and more and more people will fight for the left over dollars.

In order to get out of the recession the money supply will have to be increased.

Family Promise is a wonderful program that produces significant results. The churches who open their buildings to homeless people are doing the work of the Master. I have served food to Family Promise participants several times. This program works.

No, don't you understand? These people deserve to be in their position, they deserve to be suffering. It's their own fault for not being born with the right name, or in the right part of town, or with the right connections.

It's the American/Utahn way!

And only a racist can turn a story about a homeless family into a rant about illegal immigration.

LVIS

Wow, Shaun. I had NO idea that banks can create money out of thin air! How, exactly, do they do that? Because, y'know, if they could, I'm sure they would, and we wouldn't have so many banks failing (over 100 so far this year).

Deepenin recession? But Obama said the recession is over! Could he STILL be lying to us?

@Bountiful Democrat
Recession only means that the economy is receding, ie getting smaller. A recession ends when the receding stops. This does not mean that things are back to normal. Putting a plug in the bathtub does not refill it, it only stops more water from going down the drain.

Unlike a recession a drought is over, not when it starts raining again but when rainfall is back to normal.

The economy is still in deep dodo! Most of the jobs created in the recession have been temporary government jobs (Census). Real jobs must be created in the private sector.

It is wonderful that programs like Family Promise exist to help those that otherwise would just disappear. I would love to see a program where every American who graduates from high school and has a clean police record (and passes a drug test) could be granted a building lot for a home. We have millions of unused land, it belongs to America. Why not give it to Americans?
Let's give the means to take care of themselves.

terra nova

Sigh. Perhaps we should simply find a way to give a little more to help others. Let's lend a hand where we can. If we do, we will be blessed and bless-ed.

Here is a story about the Obama regime and the Democratic Party that speaks of their legacy. With the Obama regime's no growth policy you can see the inevitable results. How's that "hope and change" now. Don't be fooled by this story. These are the direct results of the Democratic Party for years and will always be the policy of the Obama regime.

CaseyA

I take something very different from this program. I read this story and I thought, "That is a worthwhile organization of individuals helping individuals." This is how it should work. Private citizens organizing through their church and lifting up others. This isn't government forcing reallocation of wealth. This isn't about illegal immigration. This is how it should work. One final plug, if you see a homeless person and they ask for money, don't give it to them. Give it to a shelter or your religious organization. Volunteerism can multiply the value of the little money you can offer and make it enough. Give to the Road Home, give to LDS Fast Offerings, give to the soup kitchens run by the Catholic Church, give to the YMCA. Make a difference.

CJ

So sad and tragic. We can pay for health care, education, and other benefits for 12 million citizens of Mexico who broke in here, but we can't take care of our own. And now we have a President who spends his time pandering to illegals for votes by suing one of his own states rather than taking care of families like these. We need to stop talking about amnesty and guest worker programs and talk about real jobs for real Americans.

ObamaRepublican

@Bountiful Democrat Great point it seems the author wants to promote negativity!

On another note those that still struggle in our current environment need the help of all. The BofM is very clear that we should not judge the beggar and turn them out.

It is sad that the lack of charity forces institution like government to tax and spend on programs like welfare.

BoomerJeff

If Utah enforced our current immigration laws, a family like the Brown's would have a job. Our compassion is misguided, our fellow citizens should be helped first.

Tom Smith

The face of American citizenry is changing everywhere. I have been unemployed for three years, and my family dynamics, hope and dreams are fading. We could very easily be homeless at any time. The social service organizations are overwhelmed and becoming hardened and callous. I pick up day jobs and short stints here and there even though I have a masters degree. There are few jobs and even fewer for older employees. At 61 years of age, there is no insurance. I had planned on working to age 66 under new guidelines, but now will take Soc. Sec. at age 62 just to have an income albeit with a 30% reduction in benefits.
