The rivalry can end or be played every 5 years or so for all I care.

I don't know. With how bitter this is getting (**glancing at Chris B., hedgehog, at the sorts...), maybe it's time to give it a break until people in this state learn to cool off a bit.

Utes 31 Tide 17

As much as I love the Holy War, a year hiatus would probably be for the best. Give both sides a chance to get some perspective, cool down a bit.

With the Max Hall and the Pac-10 storylines, expect this November 27 to be the ugliest it's ever been. Here's hoping they significantly ramp up security.

BlueCoug

My vote is to either play the rivalry home-and-home the last weekend in November, or drop it altogether.

Playing the game to start the season or in early October just wouldn't be the same and would distract too much from conference play.

The rivalry needs to kept alive if for no other reason then to give the Pac Utes the opportunity to see first hand just how good Heaps, Apo, Quezada, Stout, etc are going to be.

Funny, after reading the story, I was logging on to say Utah should not play BYU for the same reason.

Chris Hill knows it. It would look bad to his new Pac buddies on the U to be dominated by BYU.
===

Also, so Utah gets into the PAC, loses a bunch of games, and all of a sudden BYU is important for a win, and BYU is just going to be better.

So the BYU game becomes the Bowl game for the Utes...

This sounds way too familiar.

And, this time, BYU would get pumped up to play Utah. I am positive Chris Hill is not wanting to play BYU. BYU will win, and Utes will look bad.

Hm...may be Utah should schedule the BYU game the 3rd, 4th week of the season. In that case, BYU will become "irrelevant" sooner than the TCU game.

EndOfAnError-01/20/2013

Drop the games. They have become too nasty and bring out the worst in both sides.

Sorry Mike but the title to your article should be "Utes vs. Cougars rivalry must go."

I too am tired of the bitterness, hatred and childishness that takes place on both sides.

In the last 10 years, it is 5-5 and each has an overtime win. But, BYU's 5 wins have been by a total of 22 points; Utah's by 72. It is a close rivalry, but it is 2 blowouts by Utah and 8 games that have been settled by a touchdown or less going down to the wire. Utah has only one win of less than 7 points and that was a 3-0 shutout.

There was a time when the late season game was Utah and Utah State on Thanksgiving. That rivalry moved to early in the season. Now, Utah will probably have to play Colorado over Thanksgiving weekend and that just isn't going to be the same as playing BYU. Perhaps we can agree to play our main instate rivals late and have the Utah-Colorado game early in the season.

BYU has never needed Utah to be successful. Certainly Utah does not now need BYU. Enough with the rivalry. It is no longer healthy.

fedup

the last time my wife, who is a U fan, when to Provo to the rivalry game, she was threatened by a group of fans dressed in BYU garb, who screamed threats of harm to their bodies , their homes and their vehicles. these BYU fans were an older man and his little old wife, their adult children, and several small children. does being a fan excuse these behaviors by God's own? I say let it die, and leave it dead. the fans on both sides are getting violent.

What are you people talking about?? Take a year off to cool down??? I just started at Duke and see t-shirts all over that tell UNC where to go (not the sort of thing the honor code office at BYU would let students get away with...). The holy war is pretty tame when compared to how much Duke and UNC hate each other, but none of the administration makes a big deal out of it, because it's FUN. PLEASE KEEP THE HOLY WAR!!

just sayin'

No real need to play BYU anymore. The Utes should keep their future schedule free of non-BCS/mid major schools or at the very least to a bare minimum. The Utes also have to factor in Utah State also, maybe rotate BYU and Utah State every other year. Utah needs to focus on bigtime BCS ball in the PAC12. Go Utes!!!

It's dead. The rivalry. Duh, it's a no brainer. Why would Utah want to risk injury or hunging up an early season loss to continue playing BYU? Nothing to gain, everything to lose.

It's dead. And life goes on.

RR

People don't realize that most schools don't have a true rival. We have one here, and boy is it entertaining! I think it's a bad idea to stop it for any reason, even for year. If people can't control their emotions, that's their lame problem. It's a game, not a life or death situation. Keep the rivalry alive. It's bring excitement to life!

AllSeeingEye

Despite the boorish, silly behavior of so many with the taste of sour grapes in the mouths (on the one side), and with delusions of dominance (on the other), no question the rivalry should live on.

So funny that someone can be convinced that Chris Hill is not wanting to play BYU, but it Tom Holmoe referring to the rivaly in the past tense? What's up with that?

Doesn't matter.

Long live the rivalry!

RR

Whoops, a few errors in my last comment, but I too agree it needs to be played the last week of the season. Other schools do it that way, and so should we.

Ernest T. Bass

This will be a much bigger deal for byu than it will be for Utah.
I don't see there being a game in 2011 due to the way the schedule is coming together for Utah.

Vegas coog: Apo looks good but Utah gets receives like that every year. Same with the RB, Q. What makes you think they'll be any different than other over-hyped recruits in Provo every year?

Brave Sir Robin

I hope Utah never plays BYU again, for several reasons.

1. Sports are about entertainment and having fun. There's too much hate in the rivalry now...it's not fun any more.
2. With Utah in the Pac-10, the rivalry now helps BYU but hurts Utah. Not sure why Utah would want to do that....
3. The anger, sour grapes, and delusions coming from Provo have gone over the top (see posts by VegasCoug and Buster above for examples). I'm afraid - literally afraid - of what will happen to the BYU fanbase if things get any worse for them (and they may).
