If DWS has all this data and can connect the dots to identify illegals, then why has that office failed to do so on an official basis to help crack down on people who are breaking the laws?

Instead of threatening the state worker with jail, they should be giving them an award for "doing a job some Americans won't do" that is enforcing the law.

Heck, DWS should give a copy of all the names in Salt Lake City to Chief Burbank and Mayor Becker and tell them to get busy. If they refuse, the Legislature should ban any funding to any city or municipality that fails to enforce immigration laws and/or declares themselves to be, or acts as a "sanctuary city."

Legal immigrants are welcome, but lawbreakers (any race, from any country, breaking any law) are not!

I've seen a lot of embarrassing things come out of Utah, but I've never been so disappointed in my home state.

So Corroon attacks the Governor for what? Not grandstanding politically on this issue? Congratulations, Mayor: While the governor orders an investigation, tries to tone down the rhetoric, and keep tempers even, you exacerbate the situation. Good job. That's some leadership right there.

@JP

You and me both. I came back from serving twenty years in the military to a very different place than the one I left. The place I left was a fun, peaceful, neighborly place. Now it is a paranoid, festering, untrusting place. I was so excited to move back when I retired. That has been tempered greatly in the past few months.

What is wrong with Utah? Why aren't more people outraged and condemning the list?

What a shame that descendents of pioneers who were persecuted, abused and whose rights were violated
are involved in doing the same things to others (Hyspanics) that was done to their own ancestors.

I'm glad Hispanics are voicing how it feels to be targeted by a witch hunt. Only those who've been there know how it feels.

If Mr. Yapias is receiving death threats, the FBI should get involved and find those nazi cowards.

The FBI should also get involved in finding those who are terrorizing INOCENT AMERICAN CHILDREN by calling their homes anonymously and threatening their families, their wellbeing and their safety.

Where are those Utahns who believe in protecting and strengthening families. Where are those Utahns who believe in protecting the inocent and vulnerable (little kids) in our society?

These people feel like Jews in Nazi Germany? I keep hearing about all their "fear." The only thing they have to fear is getting deported. Forgive me for not being sympathetic, particularly those on the list with SSNs, which they got....how? When some vigilante goes door to door and harasses or assaults someone, I hope our police throw the assailants in jail. But as is, the fear is ridiculous. Nazi Germany?!? Do these people KNOW what happened in Nazi Germany?!?

I work with Hispanic and other immigrants frequently, illegal and legal. I am sympathetic on a personal level with these individuals, but I can understand that we need order and we need law-abiding residents. We need to fix our statutes to allow workers to come and find their place and assimilate. We do NOT need to keep the status quo. We need to raise the quotas, streamline the admittance procedure, and let people come who can and will work, as many as can find honest work is fine with me. But let's get it codified, and let's enforce our laws.

Like AZ's situation, I'm happy that at least our attention is getting focused.

To the woman with the "I could be illegal" shirt: Actually, no you COULDN'T be illegal, if you are here legally, anyway. If you are here illegally, then yes, you are illegal, but there is no "could" about it. The law is the law. It has nothing to do with your race or the color of your skin. Now there is the fact that there are many Mexicans here illegally. But the Arizona law is not racist, "the list" is not racist, and I am not racist for thinking those here illegally are breaking a law and should be treated accordingly.

If you are here legally, then fine. I say "welcome to the USA" and welcome you with open arms.
But if you are here illegally, then I say you should have to go back to the country you legally should be in and do what you need to in order to get here legally.

The person that produced the list should be jailed. They are breaking the law by revealing private information, regardless of what the information is about.

Unfortunately, this is the fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine in all its glory. While on one hand I think everyone on that list that is illegal should be deported immediately, the other hand recognizes that the law was broken in getting that information and they shouldn't be.

Any race, creed, color or national origin could be illegal. It seems the race card is used to justify law breaking and at the same time discredit opposing opinion.

I've never been more disgusted with our state and law enforcement as now. Illegal immigration has shown us the dark side of business/legislature/law enforcement. I can't remember a time in history where are laws were so ignored by so many.

We need to return to obeying the law, and demanding others to do it also.

After reading that the list was sent in April to ICE and after no action, they were forced to send it to the media, I think questions need to be answered by the state and Federal government why actions were not taken.

Americans should not be afraid to report a crime.

JBrady

One more thing, the Immigration Policy Center claims to be impartial, and I do not question that, but the figures they quote come from the Perryman Group, which has come under scrutiny as not being impartial.

If this list did come form the DWS employee's then they should be given an award and protections of the law to protect whistle blowers. Known cases of ID theft being exposed should be rewarded and praised.

The DWS should be investigated and chastised for their participation in ID theft and criminal acts of illegal use of other peoples information. The list has yet to be proven false and this cover up is criminal. This is Corroon in action, criminal action. First, Corroon has to prove the information is inaccurate before he can file any criminal complaints to anyone who revealed these crimes. The real crime is in the DWS department for putting $39 million dollars a year of their funds in the hands of criminal illegal foreign nationals.

I want to know if my ID has been stolen and Corroon does not have the right to deny me that information. Publish the list so the people of the US can put a stop to ID theft.

Herbert should also take action and fire the head of the DWS and his staff who have participated in this ID theft ring.

Chief

Yes indeed, she certainly could be illegal in her heart of hearts.

The govenor has done the right thing in this instance. He has ordered an investigation to get to the bottom of this.

Many of the "patriot" types were so excited to see this list come out. They are always saying there is no excuse, no matter the circumstance to break disobey the law. Their true colors are showing more brightly.

HopefulHeber

I agree with dn subscriber. I love this country and love what it stands for. I think if the government knows who is illegal why not kick them out. They certainly had no problem handing me a speeding ticket when I was caught speeding? Or hand out tickets when they found illegal fireworks being sho off. Why is it so hard to enforce this illegal immigrant thing?? They are illegal! I happen to know that it's not just Hispanic people that are here illegally, even though thy get all the attention. There are many nationalities here illegally.
I agree that if you are here the right way you are more than welcome to seek the American dream but if you are not please go home.

If the State had a list of say bank robbers and hid it away, would people feel the same as they do about illegal immigrants? If they are here Illegally, and the State is hiding the fact, then lets have a police investagition into the State employees that have been hiding the information on the illegals.

defibman

"Meanwhile, leaders of Hispanic groups said at a Thursday press conference that "the list" has made many Utah Latinos feel like Jews in Nazi Germany."

Really? And how would they know? Maybe many of us feel like we are being treated like we have a Trojan Horse in our country! Also DN why do you refer to them as "Utah Latinos" if you are referring to the ILLEGALS? Are you not already accepting them as residents by using that term. THEY ARE HERE ILLEGALLY stealing from the taxpayers(SSNs, welfare, medical care, food stamps, etc, etc, etc.

Pete in Texas

How about the shirt that Rocia Mejia is wearing? Way to thumb your nose at the government, the justice system and everything that is SUPPOSED to be happening here in America when it comes to keeping the illegal immigrants from living here. They're at this meeting crying a river about something that is starting to be enforced here now while Mexico and probably every other country in the world currently does... namely: enforce the border rules and when you find someone in your country illegally, deporting them.

I hope someone checked her papers just for wearing the shirt. I would have.

Sheesh....

Noodlekaboodle

I think that the person who release the information could possibly be charged with violating the HIPPA law. They release private, confidential health information to the public, which is punishable by 1 year in jail 50,000 fine. I think they should be charged with that as well.

Liberal Ted

I love the shirts that they are wearing standing in front of the Mexican flag.

They should change their shirts and have, "I am illegal".

Liberal Ted

Well why doesn't the governor condemn all criminals including illegals?

The governor should condemn this list and everyone else that commits a crime. Including rapist, drug dealers, illegals, white collar crime (that's kinda racists in of itself), illegal political activity....and so forth.

And the governor should have not only the mexican flag behind him, but, every flag of every nation behind him except for this countries flag. Because that is unconsitutional.
