It's a no-brainer to let Matthews go at $7 mil per year. The best way for a small market team to self-destruct is to overpay for role players, such as Matthews.

Philadelphia has long been a willing trading partner with the Jazz, and earlier this off-season had wanted to dump Andre Iguodala's salary--which seems to match the trade exception that the Jazz just got for Carlos Boozer. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jazz aren't talking to Philadelphia about Iguodala, who would be a significant upgrade at shooting guard over anyone the Jazz have had since Jeff Hornacek.

I also like Ian Mahinmi, who San Antonio does not seem interested in re-signing. Mahinmi is quick, long and athletic in the mold of Derrick Favors, but seems to have more developed skills. In some film I looked at on the internet, he showed the ball skills to dribble drive, as well as good shotblocking instincts and ability. He is tall and long enough to play both PF and C, although he does not have a lot of bulk. He could be that "defensive presence" all the Jazz fans have been clamoring for.

I am really beginning to hate the portland traiblazers!! They are just playing a financial poker game with the utah jazz! Is Wesley Matthews good? Yes, but is he worth 5 years 34 million? Not at all yet! His first year did not earn that average! Portland plays poker with the jazz by either stealing a player the jazz wanted to keep but can't match with money, or they convince the jazz to fork over the overpriced money to keep the player! Last year Millsap, this year Matthews! The blazers just want to bring down the jazz however they can and they are laughing the whole time while doing it! They just want to secure northwest every year because all they want is the playoffs each year to satisfy their treehugger fans! I hope they continue every year to lose to the Jazz and continue with half their team injured!

it is always talk but nothing ever happens

I mentioned Childress several times last season. He did much better in Greece this season over last, young and long and can defend. The Hawks I am suprised did not take him back.

Mason I could see from the 2 year ago version, not last year

Morrow is another I had talked about getting for AK with Nellie the Buffoon

Foye snooze
Butler snooze/fair

TrueFan

I can't believe the Jazz would even consider any of those guys over Wesley. This is a no brainer.

Harrington is a knucklehead who has been traded all around the league, and who is coming off a fairly major surgery.

Shannon Brown...say what?? He isn't a two-guard. We don't need another point guard. He can't defend at that position. He isn't much of a playmaker either. He can duck...whoopee!!

Ronnie Brewer can't shoot, and he's coming off a severe injury. He may never be the same player we remember. His is an injury which is especially concerning since he's a guy who likes to play above the rim.

Roger Mason and Rasual Butler are journeymen who are much older then Matthews, and have already peaked.

Give me a break Jazz brass...just sign Wesley Matthews.

Here are the WP48s of the SGs mentioned.

Mathews .063
Brewer .087
Morrow .084
Brown .056
Mason .038
Butler -.043

The Jazz need outside shooting and defense from the SG position. Mathews will improve his WP48.

The Jazz are best off to get an SF with a higher WP48 and move CJ to SG. That is cheaper and improves the team WP48 a lot more. There are SFs left with WP48s in the .15-.20 range.

Brewer would be okay as a back up but not a starter unless he could solve his shooting problems.

The Jazz have to have "wings who can shoot". They have to replace Korver.

Make a better offer to Morrow? Brown might be okay for a couple of years for reasonable.

How good will Mathews become over the next 5 years.

Things will work out for the Jazz they need to add shooting and a back up PF/C for injuries for now. They can do that.

They need to make sure they do not add back the WRONG players. Be patient. Get the right players.

Get a hard salary cap in the new CBA.

POR wants Mathews because of what he did against LA. They will trade one of there SGs for another position and play Mathews.

The SG position is crucial for some systems. They will over pay for SGs. There are many SGs who are not real good. They tend to be cheap.

The Jazz do not use the SG a lot. It is the least important of the positions at least in the way that Sloan has been running the flex.

The Flex needs to be updated for 3 point shooting. Is Mathews the best option at SG for the next 5 years. If he is then match POR. If he isn't then get an SF who can replace Korver and move CJ.

If desperate play Gaines at SG until the right SG can be gotten.

In the mean time get a replacement for Korver (Hayward is replacing AK as he moves to PF). Get a back up PF/C. Mahimni or Amundsen would be good.

The Jazz have to spend about 70 mill to compete. Get used to it. Make whatever adjustments have to be made to run with a salary of 70+ mill.

@Hunkerdeidaho
Your just starting to hate Portland? Where have you been for the last 30 years? Along with LA, Denver and San Antonio they have always been tops on my hate list.

toddfromsantaana

YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS

O Connor has literally lost his mind. There appears to be a possibility of a player acquisition. This player does nothing for me outside of some emphatic dunks. He is not what will make the Jazz better, it will downgrade them.

Hint: In 20 minutes per game, averaged a whopping 8 ppg, 1 assist. 42 percent shooter,32 percent on 3s

WOW

Shannon Brown

He told the La Times Sunday he has had "a couple of offers" The Bulls were the other

So you think this was better than signing Matthews before at 4 or 5 mill a year

This man is clueless

I am laughing so hard at the continued incompetence, I may have to call Magilla Gorilla

SJ Bobkins

I've followed the Jazz since they arrived, while living all over the west, including Sandy and Provo. Even though I bought season tickets for the Nuggets, Sac Kings, and currently the Suns, over the years, I've cheered for the Jazz. With all the current developments, I don't know how you would do things differently if YOU TRIED TO DESTROY the team. I'm not a local who can get completely turned around by an anti Utah comment coming from a player but I get it, when Jazz fans turn on a player. However one such player CB will cost the Jazz at least 15 games next season. I have never understood the love for AK nor the hate for CB, but that's academic right now. Tell me how dumping Almond, then your best shooting guard for nothing and letting his back-up go, along with the best rebounder and scorer are part of a grand plan to make the team better? The Jazz need to save the fan support by reaching out and letting the fan in on either what they can't prevent happening or how they intend to respond.

Kakashi

@TrueFan

you don't overpay players like Wesley Matthews...give me a break...yes he is good...i mean...he was a great defensive 2 guard...but for a role player? getting paid major bucks?...its better to find a cheaper version...i'd say Matt Barnes...i also like Draft Dumbie's suggestion...Andre Igoudala...Iggy is solid...with the right system he'll be a beast...and a definite upgrade...I'm not sure about ian mahinmi though...because i haven't seen him play yet...but...i think a mid level TPE around 6M could get us let's say...a Troy Murphy? or a JJ Hickson?...Roy Hibbert is the future for Indiana so that's out of the question...

EyeDeeTenTee

The free agent "bubble" is about to burst (If it hasn't already) and I hope the Jazz aren't getting ready to spend big bucks speculating. Better to have an off season than pay Ostertag wages to another Ostertag.

What's up?

Portland is our "best" GM. Their offer to Milsap last year makes the JAZZ look smart, with Paul's deal now.

King Black

@ SJ Bobkins

Well if you do not understand why we like AK and why some didn't like Boozer then you obviously do know know or pay attention to what the heck has been happening with the Jazz the past couple of years. Cause if you did then you would now how Boozer in the middle of a season said he wanted to leave Utah because he would get a pay raise no matter what and that he basically said he'd rather play with wade or rose instead of D-Will (subliminally).

And you would know how much AK's presence changes a game when he is in it.. ever notice how they went like 20-3 when AK came back from injury then started loosing again when he had to sit out again.

And how was Almond our best shooting guard then.. he couldn't guard anybody and when he did play he always shot horrible he was always around like 2 for 8 every time, he played in a game, when he got the chance... so I hardly call that best shooter not even close.. remember D-league success doesn't always translate into NBA success

Who knew there were so many experts who read the Deseret News.

I believe when all is said and done,

and especially looking at what else is out there,

the Jazz will match the offer,

continuing the history of tying up too much money on role players, bench players and otherwise mediocre and one dimensional players,

or on over valueing the jazz's own players like ostertagg, ak, okur, millsap,

and not having enough to get real stars here.

and the looks of things

it appears O'connor is incapable of getting anyone who is remotely somebody to sign here,

unless they are doing it for the money (boozer)

or they are a slighlty better than average player looking for a starting job BUT not good enough to start for any legitimate contender (okur, raja bell), in other words not the "true" star you need to build a contender around.

Doug10

You think Todd is excited now, you just need to wait for another week when the Portland team makes an offer to Fesenko.

The optins are there for the Jazz to have another wing player but they need to discuss who fits in their system better. Whether they pay one guard 4 millon vs paying Matthews 5.7 million will be immaterial in the long run.

Matthews has shown zero loyalty to the Jazz thus far and that might be disturbing to others as well as me, and may be part of the Jazz consideration on whether to keep him or not.

Bugoff

The Jazz are not just slow they have a bad case of Rigor Mortis.

DAL is picking up Haslem and Mahimni, like they really need them.

Farmer is going to NJ, no loss but an option.

The Suns are getting Turkoglu and Childress and will be better than they were last year. They got Childress for a draft pick and less than the Mathews offer. Turkoglu is renegotiating his contract.

MEM is getting Tony Allen which means Brewer is available. Wings who can't shoot were a disaster and will be even worse without Boozer.

Wallace is at DET.

I for one lack a lot of faith in the Utah FO. I am tired of the excuses. They are not getting the job done. I believe in results. They have holes to fill and have done nothing while other teams get better.

They talk but they don't do.

They needed to lose Boozer and maybe Korver. They need to replace Okur period. They are getting mugged on Mathews because they bungled all of the contracts on their young players (not just Mathews).

You can't run a franchise this way.

This is more pervasive than KOC.

Donald

I have a lot of respect for the Jazz management, but it looks like they are getting outbid on any move they are trying to make. Are they lowballing every free agent they talk to :)

TAGZZ

Bring in Matt Barnes and Shannon Brown... Both are great players!! Barnes seems to be a Bad Boy that will do anything to win, and that is what the Jazz need right now!!
