My daughter was deciding where to study advertising and graphic design this spring. We visited other schools who could only offer internship experiences of a few on-campus posters and stage bills for the theater dept. At BYU, she was shown around the ad-lab by a student with recognized ad campaigns on the wall. Very impressive! Yep, she's a zoobie now!

Congrats to BYU. The entrepreneurial spirit is there, all that is needed is funding and perseverance. The Financial Times and CNBC have also done nice pieces recently regarding BYU students and alum. Business is needing the type of grad BYU pumps out every year.

Congrats to BYU for getting beyond the ivory towers. We spend far too much time talking and far too little doing. This is a great example of "doing it" and having valuable learnings as a result.

I'm lucky enough to be in the adlab. I love every minute of it. Its only because of dedicated professors like Jeff, Doug, Kevin and Jack are we able to do it. I've had opportunities that most undergrad student would kill for. Including on working on a project for Haagen Dazs.

Too bad they're learning the wrong kind of advertising. The ads they make are typical of the "awareness ads" that are good for corporate branding. They spend millions and take years to be effective. But, entrepreneurial ads and ads for small businesses are something entirely different. These businesses need sales now and unless you can track every sale to know if the ad actually produced that sale, it's a waste of money for small businesses to use these kinds of puff ads.
