not sure the point of this article, is it to promote a couple books, or to encourage reading during the summer?
imo, if it's the latter, then go to the public library, and get a list of popular offerings for the given age of your kiddo. Then checkout a bunch. Don't get discouraged if the kid doesn't read all of them--just find something on the list, and let them decide what they like.
the trouble with the most popular offerings from libraries is that you'll probably have to wait to get a book. So make good use of putting books on hold, and getting on waiting lists. they tend to clear up pretty quickly, though you lose the immediate satisfaction of getting the book you want.
really though, if you do this all year round, "summer reading" won't be a big deal... cuz you're already in the habit of encouraging reading. Then you'll have the opposite problem (which I have with my teen) which is getting them out of the house, and out of a book, and off doing something that involves physical exertion. :)
