This is why I hate unions, they defend the unemployable, the bad employee, the lazy employee, the deserving to be fired employee--they don't care. So they encourage the very behavior that should get an employee fired--but defend and sue to make sure none of their own get fired--no matter what the cause. It's bad for business, and you and I pay for it, sooner or later.
Love to see unions and public companies working so well together. Maybe we shouldn't have public companies wasting so much money having to sort out contract disputes by not employing union members.
@tq2-
I don't recall seeing anywhere in the article where the employee was deemed "unemployable," a "bad employee," a "lazy employee," or "deserving to be fired." What behavior did the union encourage in this employee that got her fired? In fact, details of the termination was not brought out.
Perhaps the "complaint" filed by the customer was false or blown out of proportion. Perhaps the termination was justified. We don't know. But, if you ever feel you are terminated unjustly, wouldn't you want to have some recourse? In this case, the union is there to help the union member.
I've never worked at a company where unions represent employees, but I have seen management with chips on their shoulders fire employees for questionable reasons. They had recourse though human resource departments which sided with them and they got their jobs back. Not every termination is justifiable and as I see it this employee is asking for arbitration as she feels that the offense didn't fit the punishment.
UTA Drivers: Never mind your agreement not to strike, just go ahead and walk out.
UTA drivers, if you don't like the job you have, then go get one somewhere else that you like better. And if there is no better job anywhere else, then thank your lucky stars that you have the job you have.
Unions will be the downfall of our country.
Unions will be the downfall of our country?

Unions are part of what makes the country worthwhile for regular working people. (Unions and the threat of Unions if companies don't behave). If you don't believe it, read your history.
Usually what we think of as bad unions are that way because they represent workers that work for bad companies. Treat people right, and usually you will gain a measure of their loyality and their willingness to cooperate for the common good.
If not, then it is the other way around.
tq2 is right. I remember the bad experience I myself had with an unbelievably monstrous female bus driver. UTA officers ended up coming over and intercepting the bus and everything. Not only were the UTA officers who came over quite reasonable, gracious and professional in their dealings with me, but I also got the clear impression that they had had a number of similar problems with this driver but were hamstrung in their ability to can her, I suppose because of the union.
Not having unions is the downfall of this country and the working americans. The evidence is in your own job. You get underpaid, fear your employer and fellow workers, and you have no pride in your job. You can't ask for or get a raise, you can't complain about your employer or working conditions, you have no representation if you feel like you are being targeted and dismissed without cause.
Untied workers, union or as employees, have some power and job security. Unions are worker representatives that bargain and get you health insurance and vacation or sick pay. The voice of many is more powerful than individuals left alone to battle corporate worker abuse. Without organized labor, Utah workers are slaves to employers and have no rights, not even with the federal labor laws.
Unions create worker loyalty and pride, non union jobs are all living in fear never knowing if they can keep their job if someone better comes along. Living in fear is a poor reason to go to work, it affects reliability and job performance and family life.
All the great civilizations of the world crumbled when they allowed unions.
Viva la UAW, Viva la Chrysler, Viva la GM!!!! Viva la Bad Teachers. OH Yes, Viva la UNION!! OH Yes Viva la Hecho a mano en Mexico. This is what your unions have given you in the last 30 years since they became pawns of the left.
@Fredd
Yeah, because child labor, unsafe working conditions, cruel treatment, harrassment, termination for no just reason make a civilization great.
