Obama means to slap every state down with this lawsuit. Then he will grant amnesty after the November mid-term elections in preparation for his re-election.

Feliz Navidad America!

"comprehensive immigration reform," Yapias said

That's code for amnesty. It failed in 2006 and 07. If it failed in good times, it will surely fail now.

Opening the can of worms of immigration may result in a much different outcome than amnesty. Is Tony willing to deal with that possible outcome?

What is curious is that for the last 9 years the Republicans had the administration and the congress and the state of Utah under their control and they choose not to do it. Is it a game they are playing now to show how stupid they were then and now? There is a lot more important issues for Republicans to deal with and that is unemployment and unemployment benefits. Preferrably getting millions of workers employed again now instead of playing hard to get and supporting filibusters for a game. Support proper regulations and care for Americans for real. They may just have their games backfire this november and lose a lot of jobs themselves. They deserve it!

It's interesting that Obama is picking and choosing which laws he fights. Sanctuary cities have been enforcing their own immigration laws for years.

DR Hall, right now it looks like the republicans are looking out for Americans that are unemployed. No person here illegally should be working while an American is out of work.

Obama needs to remember the saying, "it's the economy stupid". Right now the economy dictates immigration enforcement. The recession has brought the issue to the forefront.

I guess some of our city, state, and federal legislators and lawmakers, along with law enforcement people don't know the definition of ILLEGAL so here it is from Webster's dictionary--illegal-prohibited by law; against the law; unlawful; illicit; also, not authorized or sanctioned, as by rules. Now lets see if you understand the word now boys and girls. Follow the rules or resign, if that doesn't work we the voters will make sure you are not a elected offical at your next election, suit yourself!

I thought Utah was above Federal Law..
Hmmm Wimmer and Sandstrom have me confused now.

The Deseret News seems to assume that Arizona will lose the DOJ lawsuit, which will cause Utah to weaken its own laws. What if Arizona wins? Then you will see much tougher illegal immigration laws in Utah, not only against the illegal aliens, but also against the employers that make it possible for them to be here.

There is such a massive disgust by citizens of not only the federal government, but also Utah government, that there could be an anti-illegal free for all in the 2011 legislature, if the Obama Administration attack on AZ fails.

A super majority of Americans(two thirds) want the laws enforced!! The people will only stand for this for so long, especially in a recession.

Arizona Law mimic's federal law. Obama can't change federal law. The federal law is stricter than the Arizona law. Lets wait and see what happens. I believe Obama is stalling hoping to get some Hispanic voters out for the Democrats because he is about to lose the Congress and the Senate. It is all foolish because every legal Hispanic I know in the US want the illegal's gone. They are paying for them also to be here. Wait it out.

This is a delaying tactic by Obama. It's a huge gamble on several fronts. The Democrats could lose big in the coming elections.

The lawsuit only questions state rights to make immigration laws that piggy back Federal law. Obama ignores the patchwork of laws that already exists in other states, and the sanctuary cities that make laws ignoring Federal law. He chose to use Arizona as the battleground.

If it fails, the Feds may lose control of immigration, unless they start enforcing the current laws.

Utah should move forward with laws.

We must do the right thing!

If the feds will not enforce the border, than the states must. If the states do not, then the cities must. (Hear that Burbank?)

Our national sovereignty is at stake, as well as the very rule of law itself.

Sadly, we can no longer count on the Obama administration to faithfully execute the duties of their offices.

Worse, it is highly likely that Obama will try to pull some amnesty stunt to create millions of new Democrat voters before the 2010 or 2012 elections.

Hope I am wrong, but Utah has no choice but to rally behind Arizona's bold steps to enforce our laws.

If this fails, what other laws can be broken with impunity by citizens or non-citizens?

Why don't the governors of all states affected by the surge of illegal aliens coming to their states band together? States DO have rights against the Federal Government when it won't help them. That is really what the Second Amendment is all about, so that a state militia cannot be disbanded by the federal government.

CJ

I hope every state in the nation adopts this law, the sooner the better. I also hope that every police chief in the country like Burbank gets thrown out on their ear. Nothing disgusts me more than a guy like him who sits around trying to find excuses to not enforce the law rather doing his job, no wonder he likes Obama's policies, they are two birds of a feather. Maybe there is an opening in Mexico for a police chief, do us all a favor and go there and take Yapias with you.

Since when does the Obama Administration care about the Constitution? I guess only when it suits their needs.

patriotandmore

To attentive: good point. It is getting so bad that each state will have to have a militia to protect itself from the federal government.

Utah needs to stick to it's plan for this law, my wife and I live in Georgia, and the people here admire Arizona and Utah for leading the way on this. The Obama administration could very well loose this case against Arizona, and from what I have heard Arizona might go after The Obama administration in court for failing to do the Job of a US President. There is a case in court right now aganst The Obama administration in regards to The Black Panthers. and I have heard of several more on the way..

Esquire

Of course the lawsuit will affect Utah's plans to mirror Arizona. It should. If you want immigration reform at the national level, tell your Senators, Hatch and Bennett, to stop allowing the filibuster of the immigration reform bill now pending. It it being held up by the Republicans. Such hypocrites.

trueamerican

What Yapias means here, in saying, "The only way to fix our broken immigration system is to pass", comprehensive immigration reform" is that he wants amnesty. That's really it. What the country needs is protected and regulated borders where illegal immigrants cannot waltz into our country and take jobs. What the governor is saying is that he doesn't want to offend the part-time Park City residents who rely on Mexican slave labor. Nor does the governor want to take away the contributions he gets from Utah businesses that rely on slave labor to increase profit margins.

one vote

The cost of the Arizona legislation for the new State Immigration police, courts and detention facilities is never taken into account. Where will the new detention facility in the desert to hold all the people arrested. Reality should be factored in the emotional arguments. The President should have let the law go into effect and Arizona would have gone bankrupt.

fairfield

Burbank is right. If a misguided state law mandates that cops become enforcers of status crimes -- misdemeanors, not felonies -- and tears apart families, where children are citizens -- the result will be real criminals will get away with more real crimes while the police are forced to chase hard working immigrants away. What about the business owners who hire illegals --if it weren't for them, no illegals would be here.
Salt Lake City is "soft" on "undocumented workers" because they are our brothers and sisters.
To correct the real problem, we need to look to Mexico --it's broken. NAFTA has wrecked their economy.
This is a complex problem, and arresting the immigrant might make Steve Sandstrom feel like he's done something, but it doesn't correct any of the real problems at all -- it just creates more, like profiling and treated good people badly.
The federal government needs to lead out and get it right.

fairfield

Burbank is right. It would change his job radically, and the police would waste a lot of time chasing misdemeanors -- violations of immigration laws are not felonies.

Sandstrom's approach might make some people feel good, but it will not change things -- the immigrant will be back in the restaurant two weeks later.

We need comprehensive reform and a way to give status to those who have been here as long as those who are in line back in Mexico.
