Years ago I put up a bat house only to have it ignored by all but spiders. But then one day my neighbor came over and asked if I knew I had bats. I started to walk to the side of the house where I had the bat house but he stopped me and pointed at the chimney.

Sure enough, a small colony of bats had moved into a tiny opening between the chimney and the outside wall of the house. Numbers vary but two years ago (last time I counted) there were about 500 in there.

Weird thing is, the house was built when there was no thought of energy conservation so there is actually a large hole in there that would allow the bats to get in the house. But as far as I know only two have ever ventured in. The rest stay in "their" part of the house.

It's not unusual to see neighbor adults and kids standing in my yard in the evenings having fun watching the bats emerge for their nightly foraging.
