I'm hoping the names are an alias? The woman who fled domestic violence isn't going to be very safe if her name and her children are listed and if the ex-husband has figured out that they're in Utah. I wish these news stories would be more careful about that. Abusers will go to any length. Please protect their victim's privacy.
My heart is sadened by this story,
how tragic.
I was unaware of the this apple program.
I'd like more information, and like to participate.
BTW - I also hope DN daily commentor Mr. "RedShirt" reads this article, he surely NEEDS to.
We need to be reminded that some of us hit road bumps in life, and need assistance. Thanks for reporting about the Apple Tree program.
This is very nice that this company is doing this and that The Road Home is helping these families out but what would be even nicer is The Road Home helping the men/women who live in the dorms and that have the most important following needs:Job support and clothing (the majority of the donated clothing goes to the families). If The Road Home put more of a concentration on the men /women that are needing a hand up(not a hand out ) than there would be less homeless to deal with. As much as The Road Home has done for these families helping out each part of this homeless shelter would greatly benifet all who stay there.
Are you saying more services are needed for those single living in shelters? Why don't you start something. Solicit businesses for seconds or ask a church to start a project distributing vouchers to the local thrift stores so residents can have proper interview clothing? Or is that done already?
The Road Home is an amazing organization. It does an excelent job of lifting homeless people out of homelessness and getting them back on their feet. They do focus on families and committ more resources to lifting families. I believe this is because a family unit is less likely to revert to homelessness. I applaud the Road Home and hope that people remember not to give money to panhandlers but instead give that same money to the Road Home and other like-minded organizations.
'Senate Republicans again kill bill for jobless aid' - By Stephen Ohlemacher - AP - 06/30/10
Line from article:
'Without an extension, 1.7 million of the 7 million people who have been without a job for at least six months will have lost their unemployment benefits by the end of this week, according to the Labor Department.'
Remember, in November
Extending jobless benefits aren't the answer. The raod home does wonderful work. If you can please support them in their efforts.
