Send the hiker the search and rescue bill. He was hiking alone? being dumb, and expects the taxpayer to ante up and pay for his rescue? I for one get tired of paying for this stuff.
tq2: did you read the article? Hiking alone? No, there were two people. One used a cell phone.
It said "long backpacking trip" not "lone."
Please pay attention.
@tq2
Isn't that why we already pay taxes - to pay for emergency services? He wasn't being reckless. Accidents happen and that is what emergency services are for.
@tq2
And yes, he does expect the emergency services people to be there. That's what they are for. If you are tired of paying for emergency services, there are plenty of places where there are no taxes. Somolia is the first place that comes to mind.

I for one am very grateful for the Search and Rescue Team. I am thankful that we only have to pay for the hospital bills but if it came down to it I would be happy to pay for search and rescue as opposed to burying my child (yes he is 23 but he is still my child) or just as horrible, never finding him or knowing what happened to him. He and his friend were prepared and had a cellphone for emergencies. Accidents can happen to anyone. Thank you again Search and Rescue, you will never know how much we appreciate and are grateful to you for Kris's life. Kris's Mom
