The area there is basically wasteland that sees few people. A perfect place to store the high level nuclear waste. Even if it leaked no one would ever be able to tell because there isn't anything it could harm.

I read the piece but i'm still unconvinced that Wilderness Designation is a good idea.

The underemployed San Juan County locals know that the "Mechanized Assault on Nature" tourists bring fat wallets with them. That's why there will never be much local support for protecting the environment.
