"The spill spread to the lake in Liberty Park and has since continued on to the Jordan River and the Great Salt Lake."

That’s not good news.

I wonder if birds will ever really be able to use Liberty Park pond again. They may have to drain the pond to remove the oil sludge that settles on the bottom.

I don't see any "wild" geese in the pictures. I see a mixed group of Production Toulouse, Africans, and one Ebden. They may want to move them to Delta and that is okay but don't call them "wild". They are domestic varieties.

Sure looks to me like they are doing a GREAT job! Those are some clean lookin geese!

It's amazing to me that they can be cleaned up.

I'm not sure it matters so much that they are "Wild" breads. The fact is... they were living in the wild (not in captivity). They don't need to be a certain breed to be "wild".

I wouldn't worry too much about the pond in Liberty Park. There are worse things at the bottom of that pond than oil. It could prabably use being dredged.

And if your worried about nature and the pond having it's natural state disturbed by the spill... it's NOT a natural lake. They made it with a backhoe. It wasn't there when I was growing up.

I THINK they made it for emergencies (especially flood-control after the 1983 floods). So it served it's purpose.

If all else fails... they can start all over, in the same place or a different place. All they would have to do is dig another flood_relief_pond and cleanup and bury the old one.

2 bits:
The point is that the geese are mislabled as "wild". The DN says "While the geese are wild, the ducks are domesticated and will be held at the zoo and county site until Liberty Park is clean enough for them to return home." The geese are just as domesticated (by definition) as the ducks. If one uses the word "wild" to describe the geese because they have been allowed to run lose then so are the ducks. Perhaps the word "feral" would better describe both types of birds.

life goes on

Liberty Park pond has been there at since 1960 when my parents would take me there as a child. The pond used to have a chain-link fence around it, and the fire department would set off hand-ignited fireworks from the island on the 4th of July. In the park "overhaul" a few decades ago, the rolling hills replaced the large pavilion north of the pond.
