When you have an oil tap in your faucet?
Americans have been flushed with hundreds of years of plentiful natural resources when this Country was founded allowing Americans to leave a relative life of ease and comfort. Movies and scientific announcements have created a perception that America can solve anything problem, overcome any natural catastrophe in a relatively small amount of time - an hour or two hours depending on how long the movie or television documentary was. Unfortunately, just like reality to having to wait months for lab tests for criminal trials, addressing natural disasters through technology isn't as simple as the American public has been marketed to believe. Unless Americans begin to realize the real threat to the rampaging of the world's resources and the expermiental technology, profit-taking cutting corners driven energy industry, then the entire world may face a disaster that is much worse than the recent Great Recession.
There are so very many products in the world which contain petroleum such as: grease, fibres, asphalt products, tires, frozen food wrappers, polymers, paints, plastics, waxes, blue jeans, buttons, appliances, automobiles, fabrics, roofing materials, building products, etc. to name a few.
We should require oil companies to run their businesses in a responsible manner without expecting them to control lightening as well. Bad things happen sometimes even when we try our best to prevent them.
We shouldn't expect everything to be perfectly fine all of the time, and we aught to know that a world without oil is not realistic.
True, oil companies cannot control lightning- and occasional mishaps are unavoidable. But, there should be better monitoring of oil pipelines in critical areas, like stream crossings so our noses are not the primary detection technology. There is no excuse for a leakage of this magnitude at this site.
That said, the oil company has done a good job of commitment to resources for the cleanup. And even though some oil has reached the Jordan River, it is minimal and will not be a long term problem.
