A Church involved in business is a travesty of religion.

Mc

A Church involved in the building and betterment of a community is what religion is all about because it goes hand in hand with helping individuals better their lives and giving glory to God.

barbara

Blight is a travesty, religion aside. The church could have left Commerce City as they found it, wallowing, infested and sinking economically. The church could have stayed hands-off and watched downtown SLC die as many others have. If that institution has the means to improve and lift the economy and asthetics of a community, I say thank you for the foresight and determination to forge ahead.

Johnny Triumph

Short-sighted of the report to credit how SLC has done this. Without the LDS Church's MAJOR investment in the project it never would have gone anywhere as other municipal resources were strapped. The same would be said of any other major metropolitan area; without a major investor any project would go nowhere.

Marty22

Wow, Charles. That doesn't look like my starter, let me tell you. The price tag doesn't say "started" either.

holybovine

Much thanks to the LDS Church for the foresight of growth for all people of many faiths to enjoy does glorify God in so many ways. Short sighted are the nay sayers and negative minded people who can't see the gift the [LDS] Church has given us all. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
A non-Mormon

Agreed.

After a religion (that shall not be named) donated $200,000 to revoke over 18,000 marriages in another state...well, I woudln't give any of my money to SLC or Utah for that matter if I can help it.

And I can.

Charles and JosephOne; How shortsighted and ignorant can you get? To nitpick at the funding source of a major project which will make the whole state better and also to mock a comment made by the publisher of the article, are both totally pathetic. You two were probably complaining because one you your Cheerios was smaller than the rest while you were eating breakfast. Talk about "glass half empty" people!!!
Get a LIFE!!!!

THE VISION OF DOWNTOWN SALT LAKE IS HOPEFUL IN A TIME OF FAILURE TO REGENERATE IN SO MANY PLACES IN THE WORLD. TO INTERMIX HOUSING WITH COMMERCE IS BRILLIANT AND SERVES THE NEEDS OF MANY AND ALLOWS A FEELING OF COMPATIBILITY IN THE SOMETIMES WARZONE OF OUR ECONOMY. THANKS TO THE LDS CHURCH FOR THAT GIFT AND SUPPORT FOR A MUCH BELOVED CITY

The vision of the downtown Salt Lake is progressive. I find it brilliant to intermix residence with commerce. In a time when many facets of our lives are degenerating, this offers hope and opportunity to grow. I also would like to thank the L.D.S. church for this generous gift and support for a city I love.

To JosephOne: some evangelical thinkers are saying Jesus may have spoke on money more than any other subject. Who would have thought: Jesus and money. Many religions have disappeared (including Christ's church) because of lack of printing press, lack of ability to travel, lack of distributing scriptures and magazines, lack of trains and cars and airplanes. Money can bless people's lives, so I think religion shouldn't ignore money.

Charles: What are YOU doing to better our fair town of Salt Lake City? What's that? No, sitting in your underwear at 1 in the afternoon typing away vitriolic statements on the internet doesn't count. Nothing, then? I thought so.

The Judge

JosephOne,

I hear you can get some real bargains in Detroit. Move there.

Pagan

jp3, your post at 1:20 p.m. was very childish. To ask a question is one thing. To create an entire scenrio in your head?

Shameful.

Mr.Reality

A big thank you to the LDS church for their massive investment in downtown Salt Lake. It has not only created thousands of construction jobs, it will create many more permanent jobs of all kinds once the project is complete. And the sales & property taxes generated will be enormous. Too bad some narrow-minded, LDS haters immediately feel the need to slam the project once they see the church is involved. Oh, well. Some people just can't get over their ignorance.

Pagan,

Ah, you're still haunting the DesNews on-line pages.

And you're still full of hatred towards all things LDS.

How nice....

Will residents need temple recommends to live in this great and spacious building? Will gay couples be allowed to move in?"

____

No, residents will not need a temple recommend to move in. Let go of your anger and use your brain.

Who said it was a "great and spacious building"? The article didn't. Why would you assume that only proud and arrogant people would move in here? You clearly don't understand that money itself doesn't 'make' one selfish but the LOVE of money that makes one selfish.

Can homosexual couples move in? Based on the statement the LDS church put out about 6-8 months ago that no one should be denied the necessities of life like a job or housing based on their sexuality, I'd say that answer is "yes".

You're welcome.

Now, please lose the hate....

To those who may not understand how the LDS church's finances work, let me explain something:

The LDS church asks for, and accepts from it's members, financial offerings in the form of tithing and other financial contributions. This kind of financial contribution is considered as literally sacred because it is used SOLELY to build up the kingdom of God on earth. With this kind of money, churches and temples are built, utility bills such as water and electricity for chapels are paid for, scriptures are printed, missionaries are sent to the far ends of the world to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ and the poor are fed. THIS kind of LDS financial contribution is sacred and would NEVER be used to build an apartment building, etc.

The LDS church also runs "for profit" businesses. Taxes are paid on these business because that is what the laws of our country demand. Profit from THESE kind of legal ventures can be used for anything the church deems fit, and why not?, it's their money.

If it chooses to donate, w/ no thought of reward, to build up a city's downtown, what's wrong with that?

Nothing.

For someone who claims to be 'moving on' you certianlly are quick to use 'hate' in your post.

The question Charles posted was a valid one. Are you upset about that?

And please, do not take credit for something the LDS church has done...but the state of Utah has and continues to fail to do, which is treat others with the same rights you covet.

I'm sorry. Is getting an article on a newspaper not a 'reward?'

Isn't that like 'I gave you this. You should show me some gratitude.'

Your welcome.

KJB

I for one am grateful that private funds, and not taxes, are being used to revitalize downtown SLC and make it a wonderful place to be. For those who disagree for whatever reason, nobody is forced to live, work, or shop there.

Just imagine if more cities across America could do this....
