It is really too bad we only have a one party system in Utah. The one party is doing its best to keep it that way. Utah would be better server with a two party system!

As we have seen this past year the desire to keep a one party system breeds corruption and abuse of power! An attitude that all will be well if I keep those in power in the party happy. Anything goes!

Reason

It is obvious that the mantra of the right (reduce taxes) has proven to be a faulty policy for the legislature. The government will continue to run a deficit as long as political parties continue to promise voters they will get something for nothing. The next session of the legislature will show who really understands economics.

The solution to budget shortfalls is simple.

Cut the spending! Again!

They did a good job last year, and I have confidence that they can do it again this year.

If not, we can find new legislators who understand that philosophy.

@Reason,

In order to get more tax revenue, people have to be making money. In order for people to make more money, they need jobs. In order for jobs to exists, someone has to see the feasibility of owning a business. Small business have traditionally been the backbone of this great nation. However, when the taxes are too high, when the government fingers are wiggling their way too deeply into the business of America, then small business fails. Small business is a time consuming difficult process. Rarely does a smart business builder want to work their fingers to the bone so that government can take care of those who choose not to work.

Got it? Stop undo taxing and business increases, tax revenue increases, unemployment decreases. It's not rocket science. It's common sense.

Or maybe you're a socialist/communist? People work, give vast majority to the government, government distributes the money, government becomes the major employer in the country. They own or control all business. If that's the case, study your history and other communist countries to see if you're willing to live their lifestyle. If so, please leave now. I like America.

oxymoron

Representative Allen is a sitting member of the Utah House of Representatives. She is a member of the Republican caucus. I see no reason for her not to be a part of the discussions, no matter what they are. Like they have not had these discussions in past political seasons? She knows darn well what they are going to talk about and what decisions will be made. What's the difference if she is in on them or not? Utah is the strangest, most secretive state.

Hey DN Subscriber, spending cuts advocate, lemme ask you this question. What aspect of state spending that you personally benefit from would you be in favor of cutting?

Dwight

Hey Freedom, you obviously buy into supply side economics hook, line and sinker. Riddle me this: at what point does a tax decrease not increase revenue to the government? Ever?

Madden

A couple of points: democrats and republicans in Utah (maybe not SLC itself so much) are much closer in principles than across the nation - it should not be a surprise to see people jump party lines to support a specific person over a party.

@Reason/democrats: the problem is not with the tax cutting. The problem is that you cannot cut taxes AND keep spending. Republicans are two-faced liars who somehow keep convincing people to vote for them. Of course, the dems are also two-faced liars who also happen to have worse principles in most cases (my own opinion). Sigh.

People like "freedom" do the repubs a disservice.

When they say stuff like, "if you don't agree with my point of view then you must be a 'socialist/communist'."

Then say if you don't like it, leave now.

You make the rest of party look bad with that kind of garbage.

Carry on a decent argument but don't label everyone a communist/socialist if they don't agree with you.

That won't convert anybody!

This would also apply to the federal government under full control of the democrats.

Freedom,

Yes, more tax revenue requires people making money from jobs. But tax revenue does not just come from individuals who are employed. Tax revenue comes from property taxes, corporate taxes, sales taxes, and many more. Although some conservative pundits insist that “small business is the backbone of our economy”, that simplemindedness is not the complete story. The truth is, taxes being “too high” has never kept a small or large company from going into business. Never. If you believe that, you have never tried starting or operating a business.

Small businesses are parasitic on the big businesses and government! Small businesses find niches and specialty markets providing goods and services to the large corporations as well as the government and tax-supported organizations.

You are blind to true American history. The “private” corporations were invented by the Railroad kings who had extensive government support, mandate, and funding! That is how they got rich! Exploiting the government, the land, and the people. That tradition and legacy continues to this day. Only fools think our economy is successful despite government rather than because of government.

Still Blue after all these years

Why is Clark's position secure? that's the problem with the Repub's in Utah, they never learn. He supported Garn to the hilt, knowing all the while of the lies and crimes. In my mind, there is significant character lacking here.

We need to learn a lesson from the Bennett primary and throw out any state legislator that has been in office for more than three terms.

The career legislator are the ones that get corrupted with power.

Just look at the past year.

VIDAR

Its called using OPM (other peoples money)
Quit picking legal fights with my money!!!
If you feel so strongly then use your own money!!
This is especially true right now when we are at a deficit.
The legislator passes dumb laws, that will not hold up in court, then our state has to spend millions of dollars defending them.
