The school my daughter attended, Evergreen Jr. High in the Granite District, just had its flooring, entirely made of asbestos, removed 3 years ago. They said that there was no danger, that if an asbestos tile started cracking, it was removed immediately, but I still wonder and worry. I also wonder how many other public schools out there have asbestos? Or if Evergreen Jr. High still has asbestos somewhere else besides the floor tiles since it was built in the 1950s?
D-News--do a little investigative reporting for once and find out how many of our public school have asbestos in their buildings.
Asbestos is a silent killer. I am surprised that more claims have not been filed in Utah. In many other states, asbestos related death and illness cases dominate the court system.
The coal furnace in the home I grew up in had an asbestos coating, and since it was kind of porous and fun to poke with our fingers, I did that many times. That was over 40 years ago. It's a wonder that we didn't get sick from it.
The money that was awarded in this case will not heal the illness for Vickie Warren, but it will help with the bills that surely have piled up, as well as burial expenses, and money that can benefit her family. I'm sure a lot of the older schools and other buildings probably still have asbestos in them. Funny thing...I saw an old cigarette ad from a magazine that claimed that particular brand would "sweeten the breath (yuck) and clear the lungs". Boy, have we learned a lot since then!
