Risk/benefits? Sounds like a snake oil salesman pitch. There may be a slight benefit to pasturization and purification of milk, but that's more to increase shelf life than health reasons. As is all food on the shelves in the stores. In raw milk of cows there are also good bacteria and nutrients that gets killed in the processing of milk or any food for that matter.
The way the state department of health is responding it sounds like breast feeding is considered a hazard to infants.
It's more likely the cows got infected from processed or contaminated feed. The story failed to mention how the contamination was cleared up. Intentional health department deception of the value of unadulterated food.
Pasteurized milk is much more dangerous than raw milk.
If you research it you find that nearly all food poisoning that involves milk is from pasteurized milk, not raw. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of cases.
The problem is that pasteurization kills only some bacteria, not all. The beneficial bacteria that would normally keep the bad bacteria in check is killed off more easily, so the bad bacteria is left to run wild unopposed.
In fact, if you actually look at the research, you will find that nearly all milk related health problems are due to pasteurized and homogenized milk.

CoachG -- WHAT research?!!?? The illness is ALWAYS RAW milk. A few fringe researchers try to calm raw milk is better for you, but no where do you find pasterurized milk as the carrier of disease.
"Beneficial bacteria that keep bad bacteria in check" ... there is no war, good vs bad in milk. Bacteria just grow .. they don't have to compete with each other as long as their is ample food supply for them (ie, milk).
My2cents -- BREAST MILK? Talk about diverting the issue.
