This just goes to show how completely out of touch he is. I see him having the same fate as Bennett.
Senator Hatch, like Bob Bennett, is a good man, with some good values and who has done many good things.
However, as Hatch told us when campaigning to oust Frank Moss- "What do you call a Senator who has been in Washington for 18 years? You call him home."
Hatch was right then, but he is wrong now to try to extend his career into another term.
Hatch and Bennett have refused to actively lead the fight to pass conservative bills, or to lead the fight to stop Obama's socialist agenda. Sure, they might vote against the bill when it finally comes up for a vote. But, what about all the other maneuvering and parliamentary tricks that can be used, especially by such experienced Senators?
No, Hatch has "gone native" and adopted the ways of the Beltway, becoming pals with the late Teddy Kennedy and wanting to be adored by the left leaning media.
Please, Orrin, retire with dignity, don't make Utahns throw you out like Bob Bennett.
Bet on it. Hatch will NOT be reelected for another term!
DN Subscriber,
Forgetting Senator Bennett and Senator Hatch for a moment, there is a fundamental misunderstaning how our government functions.
Yes, there are many in Washington willing to tell us what we want to hear, and give us what we want. And yes, electing skilled and honest statesman will go a long way to correcting that.
But, don't you see that we, the American people are the problem? We elect our leaders. They respond to the pressure they get from us. You think they don't listen? Actually they listen only too well, but instead of doing what really needs to be done, or not done on our behalf, they do what the polls seem to show. Nothing against Mr. Bridgewater and Mr. Lee but they were certainly telling delegates exactly what they wanted to hear.
The reality is something much different. Our Constitution ensures checks and balances. Not even the president has much power on domestic and budget issues, it is Congress collectively. He has only persuasion and veto.
In order to reach your goals you need a significant majority of Americans to agree with you. Will the new conservative fervor do that? Only time will tell.
Hatch will lose his bid for re-election. It is unfortunate that he cannot see the proverbial writing on the wall. Chaffetz will run against him and easily beat him. The difference between Hatch and Bennett is that people genuinely liked Bennett. Hatch? Not so much.
Bennett was principled and did what he thought was right regardless of the consequences, which he experienced on Saturday. That's my definition of moral integrity. Others who are mentioned as running and winning against Hatch in two years, are Show Ponies -- all ambitious for the office, and whose main motivation is to grab headlines for themselves. They're not truly principled... but in it for themselves. I hate to see this Utah GOP Mob Mentality. A bunch of clueless people who are mad at Obama and Democrats, and then take it out on Bennett. And Utah loses valuable seniority.
Hint: Senator Hatch, lead the charge on illegal immigration if you want to be re-elected. You will win in a landslide.
Hatch works harder than anyone else, which is one important reason he SHOULD be reelected. I don't say this lightly. His schedule--self-imposed--would make any 30 year old tired. He works that hard because he cares. When you meet him, he's very warm--Bennett not so much--Hatch listens, Bennett never did; he always knew better. I met with both several times and there was a world of difference in the way I was received. Still I'm sad to have lost his seniority; that's irreplaceable at a time--next January--when we're going to need it. I hope Utahns won't be so irresponsible two years from now than to vote Hatch out. Utah really needs TWO freshmen senators! Duh!
I oppose Hatch much more than I opposed Bennett. I actually thought Bennett wasn't too bad. I hope Hatch keeps this false sense of security right up to his attempted re-election. Who knows, he may even start voting like a conservative to try and shore up his standing? too little, too late.
His previous attempts to treat DC like a state are what really set me off; that and he allowed his friendship with Kennedy to trump his duty to his constituents.
I once told Hatch that he could stay in the Senate for as long as he wanted. Now I'm not so sure when I see people attacking fellow conservatives for not being conservative enough, as if that was a good thing (which is isn't). 2012 is a ways away and the dynamics may change, but over the long run, if Utah goes any further to the right, the state will suffer for it. It will mean the loss of freedom for all of us.
Hatch is a clueless as Bennett. Just like Bennett, Orrin - you are part of the problem, not the solution. You have been part of the massive run up in the debt and deficits. Save yourself the embarrassment that Bennett endured and just retire. You will not win in 2012.
And Utah will not suffer from it. Truth and right will never be penalized in the long run. Only in a corrupt society is the behavior of our policitians acceptable.
Hatch already has his Yes vote attached to over 50% of our Nation's current debt. With the continued unfunded liability of Medicare Part D, that number will be much higher by 2012. Hatch will be tossed aside by his record alone. I just sincerely hope his replacement will stand for fiscal responsibility and limited government and not be some Eagle Forum morality police who believes government should be grown to protect us from ourselves.
I supported Hatch until I heard him speak to the state legislature back when Republicans had control of the Congress and Senate. He lost me when, in response to a question about why key Republican platform issues weren't being pursued, he said there was not the need or "political will" to make changes. Even on immigration Hatch danced away from the issue. Only now that people are angry does he seem to care. Well, where were you before, Hatch - when you could have led the charge to change things?
I'm no fan of Orrin Hatch but he's an experience and astute politician, and OF COURSE he understands that Bennett's loss does not bode well for his own career. But an astute politician would never say so; it's not how the game is played.
Most of us are not influenced by Glenn Beck or Bill Maher, Tea-Parties or Move-on. We are simply sick and tired of Politicians and of Both Parties. Most of them pursue their own power and position at the expense (and debt) of the citizens. I have decided to join with other reasonable and respectful people from both parties and many independents and make my statement by supporting third party candidates who stand for what I believe in. It's the only way to let the "politics as usual" crowd know that we are done supporting their "lesser of two evils" garbage. Voting for the lesser of two evils is still supporting evil. I for one can't do it anymore.
Take some time and check out the Constitution Party. Their candidate for Senate is more qualified than anyone running. He has a Ph.D in Constitutional Law. He has written a book about how to solve the problems we face. It makes sense. On the surface, this group seems conservative, but many former Democrats and Independents are joining because they are about getting government out of our lives to the extent that is reasonably possible.
The basic problem in this country and abroad is LIBERALISM. And one other issue is incumbancy to office. After spending significant time viewing the proceedings on the floor of the Senate and the House of Representatives is mind boggling. The quantity of irrelevant rhetoric and the ludicrous amount of time spent with members of both bodies literally speaking to themselves with no one else present. We need to have a complete turnover of liberalism or we are doomed. California and other debt ridden states punctuates my assertion. Respondible conduct in recent years by people like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have done irreparable damage to the country. All these do gooders spouting off about their utopian liberal ideas are bankrupting the great nation every conceived by God and the Founders. Washington, D.C. is entirely corrupt and a feather bedding cesspool. Many states around the country with their unfunded giveaway programs and neverending expansion of government is sickening and insane. It is time for all incumbents who have spent more than 2 terms retire and go home. The retirement plans for these politicans is way out of phase with reality. GARN!!!!!!
Hard work is no criteria for wanting someone reelected. Right principles and representing your constituents, is. Hatch will not be reelected, he is smart enough that if he sees the handwriting on the wall, he will "not seek reelection," and let someone else run.
Here's to a new senate and a new house. Our country has been stolen by Marxists, Obama disdains the constitution--it gets in the way of what he wants to do. Democrats are his lap dog, and only throwing out everyone, will the constitution have a chance to survive.
Not worried? The epitome of political arrogance and a sign of someone that has been there too long.
Hatch sees the writing on the wall. He's been there too long and will retire before he gets beat in the next convention.
As I said Saturday, Chaffetz will be the one who takes him on and defeats him.
The taking back of our country by freedom and liberty loving people has begun.
All you whiners about 'extreme right wing' drivel can join the cause or I'd advise you to get off the tracks as this train will run you over.
The conservative movement is back and it is here to stay!
Amen!!!
Hatch is quiting anyway. They didn't just kick 18-year incumbent Sen. Bob Bennett from office. Many of them enjoyed doing it. "ME TO".
BREAKING NEWS - This just in.......
My prediction and Interactive Radar in my brain says for the 2012 RNC Presidential Convention will be in held the Tampa Bay area. St. Petersburg, Florida - Tampa will find out if the third time is the charm on Wednesday. Tampa is hoping to get the 2012 Republican National Convention after failing to land the event the last two times. One reason is the area now meets the Republican National Committee's need for hotel rooms. Four years ago when bidding for the 2008 convention, the RNC requested 18,000 rooms and local officials had to include 2,621 rooms in the Lakeland and Orlando areas to meet that number. But the RNC has now dropped the number of rooms needed to 15,000. Aside from some federal money that will be used to cover security, the Tampa proposal does not rely on taxpayer dollars to put on the convention and that should help make the party look good.
Utah, no one likes Mitt Romney.
