The party of oppression speaks for itself here.

sophie

I was a Repulican all my life in California until I moved to Utah and discovered that, except for a couple of issues, I was a Democrat after all.
I suppose that in California I might still be considered a Repub, but what I truly am is a moderate. I agree with some of the ideas of each party and disagree with others. I think there are lots of thinking people like me. They refuse to follow either party's ideology hook line and sinker.
And I don't think you can define how all the people in Utah think about things by the thoughts, if you can call them that, of the current party in power.
Or the delegates of either party.
Right now, the ultra conservatives are making the most noise, but that doesn't mean everyone, or every Republican in Utah feels the way they do.
Nor are all of the Dem voters defined by their representatives.
There are lots of us in the middle.

Let's see if Utah voters on both sides believe in term limits. They way we will know that is if both Matheson and Bennett are unemployed.

In spite of the poll I really don't think Matheson represents his district. I have yet to get a clear answer out of the man. He can talk around a question better than any politician I have ever listened to.

"Let's see if Utah voters on both sides believe in term limits. They way we will know that is if both Matheson and Bennett are unemployed."

Why didn't you include Rob Bishop in there? He's been in there almost as long as Matheson. Or is he conservative enough for your liking?

This is a great example of how the numbers (polls) are rather misleading. There is no question that Matheson is a very liberal Democrat; he absolutely would have voted for Obamacare had tens of thousands of his constituents not lit up his phone lines. So the fact he voted against the bill, does not reveal his true values.

And Matheson is about as pro-gay as you can get--and he represents the most conservative district in Utah--and maybe the U.S.

And to say, at this point, that the GOP delegates do a disservice to the party, and the state, by dumping Bennett, does not allow for the fact, even if Bennett wins the party nomination, he could still lose in November.

We put way to much credence in polls, they are interesting, the do tell us something, but certainly not the whole story.

So Matheson opposes marriage equality, but also opposes discrimination against gay and transgender people.

He opposes healthcare reform, but also opposes the system before the reform passed.

He opposes environmental protections, but also opposes environmental damage.

He opposes the problems of the world, but also opposes doing anything about them.

Well I oppose him. And I'm a delegate.

"And Matheson is about as pro-gay as you can get"

This is an absolutely absurd statement with no basis in fact. Matheson voted FOR a federal marriage amendment banning gay marriage. That right there disproves your assertion.

"--and he represents the most conservative district in Utah--and maybe the U.S."

Chaffetz district is FAR more conservative than Matheson's district. Not even close.

To say that incumbents' re-elections means that their positions are favored ignores one of the major factors in Utah politics: the legislative districts have been so badly gerrymandered by the legislature that incumbents NEVER lose in general elections. Just look at the history of the last few elections, and you'll see what I mean. No wonder so few Utahns vote: they rightly perceive that the decks are stacked against fair voting.

Even though the Fair Boundaries petition was not successful, citizens should carefully watch the legislature and voice their opposition to any gerrymandering next year when voting districts are redrawn. It's Utah's only hope for fair voting.

Matheson takes whatever position he thinks will get him re-elected. He votes the way Pelosi allows him to vote.

He votes for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker and goes along with the Democrats on every vote until it gets to final passage of a bill. Then he is "released" to vote "his district" in order to protect his seat. It is a game he has played for years. Anyone, like myself, who has spent a lot of years in Washington very well knows this. It is just how the game is played.

The very fact of his being his Congress keeps Pelosi in power.

If you like Nancy Pelosi, by all means, vote for Jim Matheson. But, if you think that Pelosi is wrong and out of control, the only way to defeat her is to get rid of Matheson this year.

It makes no difference how he voted on health care of anything else. He helps keep Pelosi and the far left in power.

Mathson/Pelosi do not represent out values. He must be defeated this year.

Lets try a new party in November. The republican party has undergone a dramatic change. The party of Lincoln, has become, the party of Palin, and Limbaugh. Ronald Reagen today would be considered a liberal. He raised taxes 6 times and ran up defecits. He could not get elected. he woulnt be conservative enough. If Obama was on the scene in the 70's he would be a conservative. Dont believe it?? Justice Stephens is retiring. He is called the Liberal Lion of today. He was put on the court by Gerald Ford in 1975. What a change the republican party has gone thru. Bob bennett, John McCain, and others, not conservative enough are in trouble. You have to be NUTS like Sarah Palin to get elected in the atmosphere of the republican party today. More reason to vote democrat

Emjay

To say that Reagan would be liberal today is absurd.

Stephens was put on the court in the days when there was no litmus test for justices. If he was a qualified justice, he would be confirmed. So...the fact that Gerald Ford nominated him is irrelevant.

Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh are COMPLETELY IN STEP with Ronald Reagan and his principles. Obama is a far-left guy who, in his own writings, admits he was brought up and influence by Marxist professors. To call him a conservative is bizarre. Ronald Reagon never believed in redistribution of wealth or big government programs.

Boy, somebody on this blog is out in space.

One other thought, even though Matheson is a DINO, he is still a far, far better choice than any reich wing Republican this state could offer.

What this illustrates is that the masses are sheep. The truth is that money controls Washington, D.C., and it doesn't matter which party is in control. So-called "issues" are simply tools to get elected. Big business runs America. Sorry if you don't like the truth.

Re: "Emjay" 11:24

The proof is in the pudding, Utah Conservatives believe ignorance is bliss.

I voted for Ronald Reagan and have a letter from him thanking my family for getting him elected in California.

Please do not put him down and his history, there is no way he would he ever be confused with those two,(sara & rush).

Rush & sara want money and will say anything to get it. They have no scruples. Mr. Reagan served this country, did he make mistakes, (we all do) put he was a honorable man.

Utah conservatives are so lost in their beliefs they do not understand the contention they cause.

It is true someone on this blog is out in space, you need to try and hold your breath a little longer.

Schwa

There are very distinct differences between the Utah GOP and Utah Democratic Party. One party is founded in sane, rational, compassionate solutions to society's problems. The other is based on hyperbole, fear, and self-generated anger in an effort to whip up support and maintain their political and financial monopoly at the expense of the average citizen.

Schwa

For those that are living in their own little fantasy world, let me just make sure we are all clear.

Democrats are the party of sane rational compassionate solutions.

Republicans are the part of hyperbole, fear, and self-generated anger.

williary

What this poll really shows is the confusion in the Republican party. For example:

1)NO GOVERNMENT CONTROL! Get out of our lives! Tea Party!......Of course these do not apply to Gun Rights (Government should always protect gun rights), Abortion (Government should outlaw abortion), Marriage (Government should outlaw Gay Marriage, and outlaw the "practice" of being gay), Immigration (Government agents, police officers, should be able to stop any citizen on the street and request proof of citizenship). Leave Capitalism unregulated, but make sure the government is there to interfere with these social issues.

2)Debt/Taxes. STOP SPENDING! We know that Ronald Regean caused the national debt to explode, while W. took a yearly surplus from Clinton and turned it into the largest debt on record at the time. But we're sick of Obama spending! We realize he's trying to fix the mess W left this country in, but we don't care. Unless he can fester up a good ole war like W. to spend on, we do not want to spend.

What exactly does the Republican party stand for anymore? Besides bogging down Congress and voting "NO" on everything.

the truth

LET let the left, democratic, liberal hate and fear and ignorance ring on!

THe posts here speak for themselves.

Nonconlib

Impartial Observer, you nailed it. Both parties are just puppets of the real regime.
