Over goes the tea cart. Time for real change...a return to true conservatism.
With time running out?
There are 4 candidates that seem to have a chance of winning the GOP nominee for US Senate. Mike Lee, Cherilyn Eagar, Tim Bridgewater and Bob Bennett.
As the pollsters learned 2 years ago when Jason Chaffetz won, trying to guess what will happen at convention is pretty tough.
We do have two county delegate polls taken at Weber and Utah GOP County Conventions. Both had Cherilyn Eagar taking 2nd place over Bob Bennett and Tim Bridgewater. These two counties represent over 27% of the state delegates.
With a 3 round ballot system, any of those that make it through the 1st round could win, even if they don't get 1st place for round 1.
I believe that Cherilyn Eagar is the only one running who has supported and been active in fighting for conservative values for the last 30 years at the local, state, national and international level.
Of-course the anti-Bennetts would love him to just fade out "gracefully" as they say, and just concede. Utter nonsense!
As my Utah Senator, I expect him to put up the good fight. If he doesn't get his message out now, he is guaranteed to fail. We need Senator Bennett's experience, expertise and wisdom in Washington D.C. He has an excellent record. His challengers have none.
Senator Bennett is not fighting a ground swell of popular support for a rising star in the Utah Republican party. He is fighting massive spending and advertising by national groups who target Republican incumbents for defeat. He is fighting a strong anti-incumbency fervor. Many of the anti-leaders openly admit they hope they can hold the "anger" for two more years to unseat Hatch.
People's discussion is 95% about Bennett, with very little discussion of who would make a good replacement and why.
Bennett's record is routinely misrepresented with empty rhetoric, and for some who know better, demagoguery and obfuscation. This is an important election, and Bennett has the right and the obligation to tell his story, and why he should be re-elected
Follow the money. . . . . Where does Bennett get his money? From Mom & Pop constituents in Utah? Hardly!
Bennett spends his campaign money just like he spends us all into a national defecit. He spends like mad because it isn't his own money.
And some people want to send him back to Washington, because he has seniority near the head of the line to spend even more! Outrageous.
Go ahead and spend all of your campaign warchest Mr. Bennett. You won't be needing it in two weeks after you don't make it out of convention as even a primary candidate.
Not two weeks ago, the Bennett campaign was complaining about Club for Growth spending over $100,000 against him, and that was a summary amount of ALL money spent by that organization.
Now the Bennett campaign is spending money like. . . like. . . a Washington politician who thinks we have unlimited quantities of money.
Hmmm....interesting analogy.
Don't be fooled Utah. Bennett is a spender, and always will be. We need a new US Senator representing our state.
Sorry Bob,
Ft. Knox will not be able to mask your irrelevance, nor stop your impending ouster.
And take Hatch with you.
Another reason why the caucus system should be maintained. It is the only way that individuals without extravegant wealth or incumbents can get out their message regarding beliefs and platforms.
Without the caucus and convention system, incumbents would be voted in over and over again - unless an extremely wealthy challenger came along.
Since the FEC still doesn't have the new data on their website, I'm going to assume that the percentages hold from contributions made through 3/31/2010. Bennett recieved 65% of all campaign contributions from people who lived outside of the state of Utah. So if he spent $271,000 in a couple of weeks, it is safe to assume that 65% of that ($176,150) came from outside of Utah. That's more than the Club for Growth spent!!!!
Bob, if it's any consolation, you're welcome to hang out with my teenage daughter when you're back in Utah in a few months. You and her have A LOT in common, for example:
-she spends my money like there's an endless supply
-she never listens to me in good times
-she only pretends to pay attention to what I have to say when she's in trouble, in other words, I'm her "useful idiot"
-she has contempt for me and my "extreme" ideas behind my back
-she has a bunch of weird, liberal friends and is afraid of standing up to and speaking out against their ridiculous ideas
-as long as she is popular, she happily goes along with the crowd and doesn't think twice about her potentially self-destructive spending and actions
See what I mean? I'll buy you a blond wig and you'll fit right in with her liberal group. What do you think?
This kind of information is really kind of annoying. Bennett's money is going to do him no good at all. He could spend a million dollars on me alone, and I still wouldn't vote for him at convention. Delegates have their minds made up--or at least most delegates come to the convention with a mandate from their precincts to not vote for Bennett--so his money does nothing for him. And for Dan Jones to say Bennett would win the general because he has more money, is a slap in the face of the voters. It says, that money buys votes, and the guy with the most money wins. That is complete nonsense--especially this year.
Several factors are working against Bennett this election:
1. His historical disconnect with the voters who elected him. He gets elected, goes to Washington, and ignores his constituents for six years until its election time again.
2. There is a huge tide rolling against big spenders, bigger government, and pork--and Bennett has been at the center of all three issues.
3. There is a strong push for term limits, Bennett doesn't believe in term limits, he wants to be there forever.
4. Grass roots movements always work against the incumbent, and Bennett completely mis-read the grass roots surge in Utah (mostly because he has ignored the voters here for the past 6 years)
5. There is a strong "throw the bums out" wave rolling across America, and that works against Bennett also. There is such a strong distrust of elected officials, that some good politicians are going to get thrown out with all the bad. Only those who get down to ground level with the voters (and delegates) will have a chance.
6. Bennett never came to Washington County until the county convention. Big mistake Bob.
Youngsterz- Bob got his money from Mike Lee (after TARP). Mike Lee thought Huntsman was conservative enough for Utah. Mike Lee's only concerned about climbing the ladder and he'll say anything to convince delegates that he is what he's not.
as i understand it .. bennett has about a million more he can spend in the next two weeks (cause he wont be spending anything after May 8th) ..
so keep spending bennett .. cash it all in ... your lobby groups and special interest folks would/will be proud of you trying up to the last day spending all their money to try and keep you around .. for them
but since utah citizens are so mad, so enraged, incumbents are out and challengers are in ..
i mean come on .. you and hatch did start the world wide meltdown with your YES votes for the banking deregulation bills .. leaving you guys no choice but to support you banking lobby buddies with the TARP vote and bailout votes ..
i am impressed that utah is finally going to stop your two term promise at 3 terms (keeping you from your 4th term)
i just hope that there is enough anger and rage in two years to keep hatch (two term promise as well) from his 7th term ...
enough is enough ... so keep spending bennett , it isnt your money .. so why would you care how much goes down and out for the fight
Totally agree with tq2. Right on. Big spending, elitist senators who ignore the will of the people except at election time need to go. Where does Bennett get his money? Gee, I wonder....could it be from the special interests he caters to in Washington? Please delegates, vote him out at the Convention where big spending works against him instead of duping voters who watch sound bites on TV. His support of amnesty alone makes him worthy to be voted out, but other positions of his are similarly bad.
re: letsgojazz
Here's the difference between Bennett and any of his challengers:
Bennett has proven that he is not fiscally responsible while the others haven't.
It's time we give someone else a chance to represent us by fighting the liberal, big-spending agenda tooth and nail. If he or she fails like Bennett has, he or she comes home in 6.
facts_r_stubborn .. want some facts .. ok , bennett voted for the banking deregulation bill that opened the flood gates that lead to the world wide meltdown (hatch too but that is in two years)
bennett subsidizes corn .. which is fed to beef cows which creates a new plague ecoli which a bill kevin's law is being stalled (last 7 yrs no less) in congress due to the pressure of the beef lobbyists
bennett knows the federal regulators of the monsanto world of business (GMO soybean) are former monsanto employees who stand by and watch monsanto sue normal soybean growers out of business
bennett has watched his peers in the senate double their personal wealth while in office (feinstein from calif and her husbands FDIC contracts)
bennett has committee meetings and john Q public cant attend the meetings cause lobbyists fill all the seats (lobbyists dont have to wait in line)
want more ?? look a little and see why utah is finally mad enough to say enough is enough .. doing business this way in DC is over ...
bennett along with other senators are owned and operated by lobby groups and special interest groups (spending their money right now)
What a waste of money.
I will refer to Bennett with the same words Bea Arthur's character in "History of the World, Part I" did to Mel Brooks when she worked the unemployment office window, and he came up and announced his profession as "philosopher".
Remember Bob Bennett's 1992 campaign still owes Bob Bennett $1 Million.
He can just take the $1 Million he has left and pay himself back.
Does anyone know what he can do with what is left after that?
Ask yourself, is the amount spent inversely proportional to the built-up angst among the electorate? The more you spend, Senator, the more desperate you appear, and it's all for naught.
I'm a delegate and won't support Bennett at convention but I recognize what he's done for the state.
I'm supporting Bridgewater becuase he's the only candidate with a shot who knows what it's like to meet payroll. He's the only one who knows how to praxctically apply what he's learned in life.
Lee was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and doesn't know what running a business means. He's a great speaker but that's the last thing we need in DC is another attorney to get up and speak but do nothing.
