People get their news online these days. I'll bet the online version is still popular.
I am really glad the online version depends on advertising for its revenue flow, not subscriptions. There are enough free sites, that if I had to pay for it, I would just choose another source.
I've been reading the DesNews on-line for about 6 years now. I have looked periodically (no pun intended) at other newspapers that purport to be on-line; as of yet, I've never found any as good as the DesNews that are free - so I stick with the DesNews.
And yes - even though I am in Idaho, I see and visit numerous of the ad banners that the DesNews puts up (just yesterday I visited the Ivory Homes website via DesNews banner - so DesNews Advertising Dept. - hope that helps you bring in some more revenue!).
Like - cval1 - above, the fact that it is free makes a huge impact with me. The quality of the writing (most of the time) and the breadth of coverage are also very significant, but these do not outweigh the free access.
I prefer the DesNews online to the print publication. Too many ads in all the local print newspapers. I do subscribe to the WSJ print publication as it has good in-depth reporting on a variety of issues (something I wish the local newspapers would do on local issues).
A co-worker brings the Trib to work but I find it a waste of time and full of liberal whining about various issues they think are problems.
I do hope that the Desnews can continue to offer a free online edition. It helps and I try to use the advertisers when I can.
I like the fact that the D-News enforces civility in its online comments. Although I'm LDS, I like independent news sources and am not entirely comfortable with the D-New's closeness to the church. I was a long time Tribune subscriber, but became really turned off by the outright bigotry tolerated in the online comments. I really don't mind hearing honest, opposing views and healthy debate, but get tired of the level of incivility tolerated by the tribune and even encouraged by the snarky condescension of some of their online bloggers. It seems like they've given up on trying to appeal to a broad demographic and have targeted the hateful SLC Weekly crowd with a lot of red-meat. If you doubt me, take a look at their Salt Lake Crawler blog and read the comments on any article that can be even remotely related the the LDS Church. So, for whatever reason, the Trib, once a great paper is working hard to drive away readers.
DeseretNews.com encourages a civil dialogue among its readers. We welcome your thoughtful comments.
