I agree with Governor Herbert on several points. Even though I disagree with many of the new delegates' blanket "throw out all incumbents" this year, it is good to see so many more participate in the current caucus system. I had over 150 people show up to my caucus meeting this year compared to the usual seven or eight.
This is a year for people to be angry. It is sad that so few participate when there is apparently nothing to be concerned about. I understand the point about talking with all of the delegates, but there are other ways to contact people, like town hall meetings, even the old fashioned knocking on doors. You can talk with regular people about their concerns, rather than the relatively very few, like me, who show up at caucus meetings.
i agree with the Governor that the biggest problem, (whatever the system), is the lack of involvement by citizens in the political process. It should be a concern to us all that Utah's voter participation rates are among the lowest in the nation. Winner take all conventions, closed June primaries disenfranchise many voters, and discourage voter participation. Time for change.
Both parties agree that the race for the at-large County Council seat is an important one, and also fields some of the most interesting candidates on both sides. The Tribune reported that Republican Bangerter not only dropped out but endorsed Winston Wilkinson. Bangerter seemed like a very decent guy in the meetings I attended, but I have chosen to support Winston. I think he has the best shot at winning in November!
Are any of Utah's other political parties having a convention on Saturday? There's got to be some alternative to these two dinosaur parties.
