"Unless the federal "Ryan White" grant – which historically totals about $4 million – is given the green light, lawmakers will end up with egg on their faces once again. And in a year when the faces of many legislators already look like Denver omelettes, nobody wants to see that."

Umm... shouldn't the reason they vote for it be that it's the right thing to do, not because it'll make them look bad if they don't?

Joshua Lowell

The fact is that if this money were earmarked for breast cancer patients, or end stage renal failure patients, or children with cerebral palsy, they would never have refused the money because the obvious backlash from voters would send chills down their self-interested spines. But it's for HIV and AIDS patients, and we all know that everyone who gets HIV or AIDS is a broken-wristed, flaming homosexual who is out to destroy society so it's perfectly fine to hate them, and since it's okay to hate, that voter backlash isn't of the remotest possibility. Sadly, these 450 patients are caught in a gamble that pits bigoty and politics against compassion and humanity.

Where do sign up to take the Legislature of its public funding life support?

You ask, "Umm... shouldn't the reason they vote for it be that it's the right thing to do, not because it'll make them look bad if they don't?"

And technically, you would be right.

However, I think you have forgotten whom we are talking about - the Utah legislature has proven time and again that they don't care if something is right, they only care about how it makes them look.

Waddoups misunderstood

In the Deseret Morning News article on this issue Waddoups said he wanted to make sure that these services were not going to be paid for by the new healthcare law. Apparently he and the legislators on the budget committee are beginning to realize how good "Obamacare" will be for Utah.

Joshua Lowell

If this were funding for children with leukemia or women with breast cancer, the legistlature would never turn the money back. They have accepted Ryan White funds for years. To turn them away now is just a politically-motivated stunt based firmly in bigotry and prejudice.

Ryan White is not a federal take over of healthcare, nor is it the apocalypse to provide medicine to someone who is ill. Don't put politics above people's lives! Accept the money.

LUNKLE BULL

Well ther they go again;living down to their reputations as mean-spritedness personifed. Shameful is what it is.

Kevin

Orrin Hatch has been a champion of the Ryan White Care Act. If this editorial doesn't change hearts and minds, then I bet he could.

My question is: Shouldn't Waddoups and his crew KNOW if this is covered by Obamacare or not? Haven't they been petitioning against this for over 1 year?

One year and they STILL don't know what's going on?

THAT is truly sad. That they work and work and work against something, and after it passes, they still do not know what it does and does not due. If Waddoups was an average guy, a taxi cab driver or somesuch, I could understand his ignorance of the subject, but why is he asking us? Isn't HE supposed to know what Obamacare does?

If not, that is an admission of ignorance.

And he is hurting Utah citizens because of it.

I have already sent an email to Waddoups about this, and I encourage you to contact your reps as well.

Ignorance an political grand standing should not come before the admited 'life and death' medications some of us need to live.

From what I understand, this money has gone without issue for the last 5 years. Without issue. And Utah get's DOUBLE what it contribues matched by federal money. (Utah 2 million Fed match: 4 million)

What is the problem?

Shouldn't our legislator KNOW what Obamacare covers, since they have been against it since it's inception?

The GOP

is against your life or death needed medication.

I'm glad Obamacare passed.

This is only more evidence that Utah is a Hate state. Money and ignorance are put before human lives.

Anonymous

Evidence that the 'Death Panels' were really the GOP, not Obamacare.

Anonymous

That's just sad.

People are dying.

Utah legislators...

boo!

"This is only more evidence that Utah is a Hate state." With a venom filled introduction like that - why shoud I pay any attention to your opinion?
sounds like your problem - more than Utah's

@8:41 am

what is righteous about playing petty politics with peoples life's?

Good Editorial

The DesNews got this one spot on the nose.

Ultra Bob

It seems to be the conservative republican agenda to bring about the failure of the Democrats and the national government.

To that end they do everything they can to thwart the federal government even to the point of destroying America. And harming Americans.

In November the voters can vote for or against health care.
