My opinion

After the Olympic scandal it is prudent to make sure these type of things are all transparent and people disclose this type of information especially when there is a major public or partisan political element to the expenditures which for a non-profit organization can be problamatic if not handled properly

John D.

I guess we will be left to wonder who paid for this, kind of like we are left to wonder about all things that are political!

No transparency. The GOP way. And would the Chamber spend the money to get the Dems?

wait

a doggone minute. Chamber of Commerce, private group, does not wish to say who picked up the tab to support the gop's visit.

That is what is wrong with America. Open records when it comes to politics is critical, chamber of commerce. Openness makes us believe that this is above board, no favors, no bought politicians, etc. etc. etc.

Of course, it is well known that the largest donor of private lobbying money and campaign spending is the ... US Chamber of Commerce. ahem... ahem...

I know, I know, they claim that the national org. and the locals are not related...

ha ha ha corruption continues in the gop.

As long as it is private money and not tax dollars. It's really no ones business except for those who are donating.

Business owner

Chambers of Commerce are private non-profits and don't have to disclose like public entities do. Who cares if any chamber of commerce raised funds from companies to promote the state? I sure don't. The government is meddling too much in my business now anyway...sign ordinances..health care...storm water fees...taxes... It seems like I work for the government in my own business!

Terry

I thought everyone knew that the US Chamber of Commerce belongs to the Rebuplican Party. It needs to be neutralized or there needs to be a competitor.

Chip

They disclosed where the money came from on C-Span...it was right after all of the health care reform meetings that Obama promised would be on C-span...talk about corruption. This was NOT the GOP spending money, this was private money spent, trying to attract an event that will bring LOTS of money to Utah.

Oh, is that were the money is comming from?
Well, is it?
Because the Chambers of Commerce isn't telling, is it?

then leave.

How can the GOP claim Obama is not being transparent, and then the Chamber of Commerce dosen't reaveal where the money is comming from?

Transparency indeed....

Democrat for the convention

This really isn't a big deal. The Chamber of Commerce is a private organization that raised money from private companies and donors to help promote Utah. If they had the chance to bring the Dem's convention and potentially bring in $170 million in new money, I'm quite sure they'd do it. This isn't political- this is economic development. This is potentially a lot of money for our state and the media coverage would be invaluable... Let it go- it isn't a big deal

Hmmmm

Agreed not that big of a deal in this case but it does speak to the larger issues at play in term of tranparency- I have lived in three other states as an adult and five if you count my childhood- I have never found a state more opaque than Utah by miles- it seems everyone has something to hide (hiring decisions, politics, etc.)- I am sure the response here will be we have nothing to hide but just want our privacy and government out of our lives- yeah that may be true at some level but I suspect there is also something to hide occasionally and any means possible will be used to obscure it- just one persons observation and data set of one

Both assumptions as 1) The Chamber of Commerce is not RELEASING where the money actually came from and 2) That Utah, a red state, would want the democratic convention here.

After Prop 8, I will never give Utah my money again.

There was a left wing organization that promoted for the people rather than the wealthy. It was wrongfully framed by Fox news, Hannity and Beck. It lost funding and had to close under allegations of corruption, yet the real perpetrator is waiting trial for wiretapping. The evidence on this organization and the corrupt filming and editing that brought it down are still coming forward in the trial of this individual.
This organization used federal grants, much like the Chamber of Commerce too. This money was lost over false accusations.
Accorn was brought to it's knees, and the evidence is now coming out about the scandalous activities of FOX and O'Keefe.

Just a hunch

I'm guessing the reason for the non-disclosure isn't strictly political. There's a high stakes investor in the city rebuild that likely donated most of the chunk for the bid and disclosing that would make people assume a political agenda when it is always emphatically stated publicly that there is none as far as the particular investor is concerned.

This is as transparant as the health care bill. Oh yeah, remember how Barack promised to be the most open president ever. We'll he has blocked information over 500,000 times since he has been in office. Where as George used it over 200,000. Yeah, Barack is much better. Oh yeah and the deficit. Barack once again has spent in one year that took Bush 8 years.

HAHAHA! Please, tell me...
where ARE dem pesky WMD's again?

Hey, genius- the big hitters driving the federal deficit are the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the downturn in the economy. Obama inherited all these aspects of the deficit from 8 years of an unqualified, incompetent President who you chose to vote for.

Pretty funny how Republicans are criticizing Obama for not cleaning up Bush's mess quick enough. He has 8 years to clean up after- it ain't happnin' in 1 year, folks.
