At least get a safety vest. Your mom is right - and knows best. Go to a sporting goods store or a bicycle shop. They can hook you up with what you need.
In the meantime, you can have one of those headlamps/flashlights on for good measure.
I'm still laughing about you having the windows up while the top was down. That is just an awesome image.
I don't think the word, dork, is right for you. I think you are called, charmingly quirky.
A few weeks ago I saw a guy walking down the sidewalk singing outloud while he played his guitar that had no strings. I almost stopped him so I could take his picture.
Anyway- you with a splunking light on your head would bring smiles to people who are despising being on the road at 5:30 am.
People here in Oregon wear blinking lights and safety vests all the time. Granted, it is really dark here, especially in the winter. A couple months ago I saw a guy wearing a reflective vest and blinking lights as he was--get this--riding his roller blades uphill using ski poles. I suppose he was practicing for cross-country skiing or something. The inner-bully of me started to come out, because I really, really wanted to punch him and scream "DORK!"
I guess I'm a dork. I run in the dark early morning and I wear a reflective vest and a headlamp, though it doesn't blink.
