Democrats touting family values? Isn't that like the Soviet Union touting freedom?
Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black?
I can't recall the last time a Utah Democratic officeholder resigned because of lapses in their family values, yet that's what happened to the legislature's two top Republicans in the year's first quarter!
Democrats for family values? Lets see.
Democrats support abortion
Democrats support gay marriage
Democrats support kicking God out of school
Democrats support socialism
Is THIS family values? If you support family values why would you be a Democrat?
is one classy guy. I haven't seen him in years and years, but he is honest and forthright. I would vote for him, just based on knowing him for a long time a long time ago.
To the other commenters, the Republicans are not the party of family values any more than the Democrats. No hikes on the Appalachian Trail, no airport bathroom trysts, no L.A. strip clubs on donor money, no paying hush money to woman that you messed with when she was 14, and the list goes on and on. Who are you to point fingers? Hugh Nibley wrote: “The worst sinners, according to Jesus, are not the harlots and publicans, but the religious with their insistence on proper dress and grooming, their careful observance of all the rules, their precious concern for status symbols, their strict legality, their pious patriotism….” At least the Democrats don't accuse and look the part, then go do the opposite like you guys do.
...like abortion? Less individual responsibility and more dependence on the federal government? Higher taxes?
Some family values.
I'd heard rumors of Democrats in Utah County, but I'd assumed they were just old wive's tales -- like Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster. Imagine my surprise when I read credible reports and saw actual photos in the Deseret News.
It is better to look at the individual candidates, rather than the political party. There are plenty of conservative Democrats, and there are just as many corrupt Republicans (if not more). Partisan party politics will destroy the United States of America. The people of Utah have allowed corrupt politicians to gerrymander district boundaries, and they've allowed dishonest extremists to take over the inefficient caucus system that exists here. They've allowed themselves to be convinced by panderers and charlatans. The people of Utah need to rise and become a better example. Be careful what you say about Republicans, as the party was originally founded to eliminate Mormons and slavery. Both of which they considered an abomination.

Agreed, the original platform for Republicans: 'The delegates got right down to business the first day by adopting a platform. The key plank was firm opposition to the extension of slavery. "It is the duty of Congress to prohibit in the territories those twin relics of barbarism, polygamy and slavery." The polygamy reference was aimed at the Mormon settlement in Utah territory."' Mormons have desired acceptance, thus eventually adopting the Republican party. If we had more Mormon Democrats, the Pelosi's and left extremists would have less sway over that party and they would also not be beholden to the right wing extremists, and politics would be more civil and productive.
Hopefully, this election this year will not be like the routine, where the the majority vote defensively instead of offensively. In that I mean, people vote to keep a certain candidate out instead of getting the right person in office. We hear, "You have to vote for the Lessor of two evils." Wrong is wrong. Whether one wrong is more worse than another, it does not matter, it is still wrong. We need to look at party platforms and candidates. If we can't personally accept the candidates party platform, which are also their values they COMMIT TO UPHOLD AND SUPPORT, then we cannot with a clear conscience vote for that candidate. Keep in mind that there are not just 2 parties to choose from, nor are there just 2 candidate to choose from. If they are both wrong, why put the wrong person in office to represent your values. Remember less-wrong or less-evil are both wrong and evil.
It's easy to fall back on "family" when your system is wrong. Kind of like "faith" with religion. "Go back to sleep America... your friends in D.C. are looking out for you." Why are we in this economic problem to begin with, maybe we should now focus on family while the criminals on Capital Hill take our MONEY? Good plan, I guess I will go back to sleep.
I don't think, based on past performance, that Democrats have any "Standards."
Those who speak of marginalization occurring to members of a political party who do not agree on their own party's platform are committing demagoguery and promoting partisanship and the downfall of our country. The CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRATS have disproportionate power right now, as the majority must appease them or lose their votes (i.e. lose the majority). Those who say otherwise do not know anything about politics. This irrational notion about marginalization is a tactic to appeal to public emotion about hot topics like abortion rights and right to bear arms. Check the voting records. It is the conservative Democrats keeping the extreme left in check...and they DO NOT ALL SUPPORT THE DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM. Read the fine print, especially in politics.
I lived for 20 years in the liberal California Bay Area. I always teased my staunchly Democratic father that if he lived in California, he'd be a staunch Republican. Of course, now that I live in Utah, I'm much more moderate than my neighbors. These Utah County Democrats talk a good talk, but ultimately support for Democrats, even conservative ones, equals support for the likes of Nancy Pelosi nationally, who ironically is from the Bay Area. That, I can't support.
Rocky Anderson and Nancy Pelosi - and Democrats wonder why they lose in Utah
Why are Democrats trying to be Republicans?
No matter what they say in Utah, they are still members of a national party that support abortion, gay marriage, feminism, and on and on.
If they truly do believe in family values, then that's wonderful. But don't try to get people to believe that your party can separate itself from the national party.
There are Democrats in Utah County? I had no idea!
I grew up on the Left Coast and saw Democrats in actions. I don't care what they say...it is what they do that I can't stand. Utah Democrats talk up a good story all you want but those of us that have experience with you know better.
I know some of you are well meaning but you are just as misguided when you associate yourself with the party and it's track record.
Yes, Iknow some of you will throw out the examples of bad Republican but they are few and can't carry a candle to the Democrats I know and the things they do to our society as a whole.
You mean Mayor Rocky Anderson who was serving in a non-partisan office, and Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California? Tell me again how those two have influence over Utah County politics?
