The wheels of justice turn slowly. Sen. Jon Greiner illegally served a whole term of four years before they decided the case. It's nice to see him finally follow the law.
This rule if it applies to Greiner stinks. So if you work for a public agency that receives federal funds you are not allowed to be elected to a part time state legislature, or city councils for that matter? The list is a lot longer than county or city law enforcement, it would also include part time national guard, and reservists, school teachers, public university employees, and the list goes on.
Sen. Greiner is only one of many that would be in violation of this law. So much for citizen participation in state and local government.
Government employees DO NOT belong in the legislature!
He never should have run, never should have served, and should be FIRED as police chief for violating the law!
After Republicans dropped $2,000 of donated money on topless dancers, I would resign too.
The prior post makes a good point, many institutions receive federal funds. And, what comes around usually goes around. I suspect there are others out there illegally serving with a nice target on their back to now apply the same law, tit for tat.
Politics is just a sport anymore. It's not really about serving the people.
Greiner carried legislation for those who want to further militarize (and federalize) local law enforcement, so the Hatch Act violation was exploited by Greiner and meaningful here.
Utahns are less free because of legislation Greiner sponsored.
Legislators who want to be re-elected would be well-advised to make repeal of Greiner's bills at the top of their agenda.
It is not about simply working for an agency that receives funds. It is against the Hatch Act if the individual is responisible for those funds and how they are spent. EVERY full-time federal employee has this included in their ethics training that is supposed to happen annually. A rank-and-file school teacher is not responsible for how money is spent, therefore is not subject to the Hatch Act. The same with a part-time National Guardsman.
