I would like to see the Governor take a college class. I am not sure if he could pass one, but attending a college class will show him how much OTHER people value education and how our lack of funding has made things very difficult for those who are interested in education.

I am still astounded a man with no education could be a Governor.

Dan Jones

This Dan Jones stuff is a joke. By reading comments on Des News for the last 2 years there is no way immigration is at the bottom of the list of people's concerns. This poll is a joke. Immigration directly and negatively effects almost every one of the so-called "top ten" issues. Why don't we fix the lies in this state first!

Reason

The big problem with polls like this is that they usually don’t tell WHICH WAY the respondent feels. For example, one person may say that “energy” should be the highest priority, because he wants to promote wind and solar, and jack up taxes on oil and coal.

If I, on the other hand, responded with “energy,” it would be because I want to streamline the process for nuclear, clean coal, and drilling for more oil (while, yes, continuing to explore alternatives). There’s a big difference, but the polls don’t usually account for these factors, so most of these polls are fairly meaningless.

I don't know where you went to school, but I was in the Nebo school district, which is notorious for having one of the state's lowest dollars spent per student average in the state. And we all know that Utah has one of the lowest dollars spent per student averages in the country. I went to a state run university and never once felt like I was missing something due to lack of funding.

I've been able to be successful, thanks to and in spite of the funding or lack thereof spent on my behalf.

It irks me so much when people say it is all about the money. Take some personal responsibility. There is a law of diminising returns. My ability to get a good education only marginally depends upon the money spent--it's more dependent on my initiative to learn.

re: Anonymous

How arrogant are you to think that the only thing that qualifies someone to be the governor is whether or not he has a college degree? Herbert is probably the most qualified governor we've had in recent history just based on his experience alone. Since you're so big on education, go do your homework and you'll see why.

Re: Anonymous @ 5:40

I agree there is a correlation between education and success. But it is not a perfect correlation and some without a lot of formal education have been successful. Outside Utah, Bill Gates would probably be the most famous.

I'll take wisdom and a good feel for the people over education any day. We have enough elitism in our government, we don't need more.

Gov Herbert: reduce the spending!!

His Personality, oh wait, he doesn't have one

randy

if herbert signs that sb47 bill (everybody by law has to go under the power company cooler keeper program and can only opt out if PSC 'lets' you out) i am pretty convinced that corroon will be a shoe-in

cant believe how gov't wants to legislate our utility bills (oh, i know why .. health law just got passed and signed why not utilities) .. (and bennett couldnt do a thing about the health law .. remember state delegates dont ballot bennett at the May convention)

incumbents out .. challengers in

good luck to us all

It would help ME to know my elected leader has a better education than the guy who delivers my newspaper.

Issues I would like to see our current gov tackle.

* Get the 3,000 tons of radioactive depleted uranium out of Utah.
* Offer job protections for our LGBT community, as of now, they have none except in SLC. (i.e. your gay? You're fired.)
* Any kind of hate crime legislation on a local level, since on a federal level, it exists'.
* Why Utah has the lowest spending on education in the country.
* Why many Utah legislators are against federal spending...but Utah got 2.3 billion of the stimulus and spends more on lawsuits against healthcare.

Keep poison out of Utah

It would be nice to have Herbert keep out the poison that Energy Pollutions brings into our state.

RW

Just think of all of the money the schools would get if EnergySolutions was permited to expand.

Just think of all the radiation poisoning they're grandkids will get if EnergySolutions is permited to expand.

Couple of things

First - get your VETO stamp out and place it on the cool keeper bill. If we want the power company to shut off our air conditioners, we'll sign up - NOT the other way around.
Second - VETO the so called "fixes" to the Public Employees Retirement Plan. They are not needed, as the folks running the system will tell you, and these punitive measures will make it impossible to hire & retain teachers, firemen, & police.

politics 2010

First and foremost, our political leaders (national and locally) should be focusing on economic development. Jobs, jobs and more jobs. People need to work so they can pay their bills, re-invest in our economy (shopping, buying homes and other big ticket items) and start saving for retirement. When people work and spend, it creates a sustainable tax base. This is the basic foundation of our economy. State government blames the federal government who blames the white house who blames private business. This blame game does nothing to create jobs for Americans and only keeps our political leaders from accepting their responsibilities as our elected officials. If your job as our representatives is too difficult, go find another line of work. By the way, why is it that our state and local governments are cutting services (for Americans), while spending for foreign aid continues to increase?? Something to ask your congressman I guess, but don't expect a straight answer.
