The logic is this article is totally off base. Lots of ridiculous analogies that misrepresent the legislation.

Simple economics

Here we go again. Tommy can't quite get it through his thick skull that adding "millions of people to the government-insured rolls" wouldn't increase "the already record-breaking federal deficit" but would decrease it. Health care costs represents a large portion of the GDP and is one of the top factors of people declaring bankruptcy. Can anyone but Tommy tell us why providing universal health care to Americans would help increase the GDP in other sectors and help decrease the deficit?

Anyone with even basic math skills up for this task? Here's a hint for everyone. What happens to a family spending 2 to 3 weeks worth of income of every month on health care or health insurance while the other 1 to 2 weeks is spent on rent, mortgage and essentials such as food? What does this do to the economy? How do businesses in other sectors survive when a sector consumes such a large part of a person's disposable income? They don't and within a few years we have a RECESSION and if allowed to go unchecked the economy crumbles and the country falls into a depression.

Reason

Great column, as always, from the brilliant Thomas Sowell.

ECR

Let's see. The sun came up again this morning and Thomas Sowell has an article full of bogus facts in an attempt to discredit the president. You can just count on some things, can't you. His supposition that the CBO is only using numbers supplied to them by the White House is totally false. The CBO is a non-partisan organization that has historically been relied on to tell the truth without the political twisting of the facts by either side of the aisle. The only thing gimmicky in this article is Dr. Sowell's assumptions that the expectations of the CBO study will never happen. Of course budgets are projections and it is up to the discipline of those managing the process to maintain the conditions that will make the projections a reality. I hope it didn't take Dr. Sowell's PhD to figure that our. But to suppose that everything included in the CBO is bogus is an even bigger fallacy. I wonder where Dr. Sowell was when the Republicans were forcing a $1 trillion drug presription plan down our throats without ANY plan of how to pay for it?

This is spot on! Obama is using bribery to get congress to go along with this disaster. Everyone who votes to support this should know that you may not be reelected. You vote Obamacare and we vote you out.
Why can't you understand, that the American people want you to start over and do this the right way. This is too important to get wrong!

ABBO 2012

why wouldn't the legislation be full of gimmicks and fraud? BO, pelosi and reid are full of gimmicks and fraud

Alternative?

So What is the alternative?

Who can offer better options?

We shouldn't have a spaghetti dinner fundraiser every time someone needs health care.

Is health care a right any less than paved roads?

irresponsible journalism

As a physician and American, I take many issues with this article, including:

#1: The author mentions Barack Obama and Bernie Madoff in the same sentence, and has the gall to draw any kind of comparison between the two.

#2: Labeling as a "swindle" and a "fraud" a good-faith attempt (however flawed) to repair our egregious healthcare system is simply irresponsible.

#3: Please rethink your Rich Uncle metaphor. It's just ridiculous. How in the world did that even make it past the editing staff? Did they read the article?

#4: You, Mr. Sowell, accuse the *president* of rhetoric? You???

same old thomas

So Thomas apparently when you write for the DN you can say all sorts of things that have "no relationship with reality" and supply no evidence to support your claims to dispute claims reviewed by an independent review office. I get that this is an opinion page but if you r are going to make claims that others are trying to use gimmicks’ to commit fraud maybe you should provide some evidence to support your claims.

Amazing

This guy gets more and more outlandish in his op-ed pieces. It is scary to think that anyone believes him and that the DesNews even prints the stuff.

RE: Rob

Dear Rob,

If you want to sway me into your camp--point out a couple of misrepresentations that Mr. Sowell made as noted in your comment.

If you don't back up such statements with facts, then that only serves to push me towards Mr. Sowell's camp--why else would you counter without any substance unless there isn't anything to counter with.

Scott

Gov. Health care is a huge $$ and power grab... and when the gov. has the money and the power.... where do you think that puts you..... yep, slavery is coming back.

Really?

"The succession of wholly arbitrary deadlines for rushing this massive legislation through, before anyone has time to read it all"

This has been discussed for nearly a year. If they haven't read it in that time, well then there is a larger problem at work here.

This article is ridiculous and I have read 6th grade essays that make better analogies.

Sowell would never support any reform. But it is important to note, that had the GOP been willing to support reform and come to the table, this bill would have been a lot different.

gg

I just have one question, when has a government program run efficient and or within budget? I'll answer that, never.

Dixie Dan

This is easy to resolve. John Boehner promised last summer that the Republican's were just putting the finishing touches on their plan. Where is this plan John? Our nation is waiting for the Republicans to step forward instead of just throwing rocks.

Bot

I'm glad to see a little common sense injected into this debate. Add millions of new patients, consider that 1/3 of the present doctors will flee Obama's socialized medicine, and what do you have?

A fleecing of the American taxpayer.

To Rob and Simple economics

Please be more specific. Are we not charging for the product for 10 years, but only getting use from it for 6? How can that possibly work? What about the second decade, how will the math work then? What percentage of bankruptcys are from health related issues? Tell me how the Medicare problem is really going to work. If a good share of the money is not coming from there, where is it coming from? If it is coming from there, what will that do to the medicare program? This is not an exhaustive list, but it is a start. I assume you know since you were so quick with your condemnation of Mr. Sowell. Please tell me how it will really work. I await your response.

Every other industrialized country in the world has some kind of universal health care, every single one. Why is it possible for everybody else and not for us?

RE: Alternative?

Firstly, it's obvious that you didn't hear Ryan Paul speak at the so called "health care summit" where he outlined alternatives that were well thought out and documented. OB dissed him as he has every Republican alternative. You can read his ideas online.

Secondly, neither health care nor paved roads are "rights". The government cannot "give" us rights as rights are something we just have, are born with and cannot be taken away. If you believe the government can give us rights, then know that what the government gives, the government can take away.
