and... Make the wealthy pay their way, including mega corporations, stop the trickle down policies that has created this mess.
The wealthy already pay their way, and your way as well.
Obama's plan to cut Constellation isn't about saving federal dollars. He actually increases NASA topline spending by $6 billion over the next 5 years. No, he shifts money from vital manned space program and technology, into touchy-feeley stuff like global warming satellites, virtual classrooms for education, etc. So he's handing space supremacy for USA over to the Russians and Chinese. He could fund Constellation under existing funding profile by stretching the program out, which is what Utah bi-partisan delegation has asked. And would preserve our defense industrial base and solid rocket motor technology that is in dire jeopardy of going away -- and thousands of Utah ATK jobs with it. No, this is the right thing for Delegation to ask Obama, who is either clueless on space, or doesn't care. (He has broken campaign promise made --look at You Tube under Constellation program -- to fully fund and support Constellation. It was all a big lie.)
The Chinese would love to pass us up in space, etc. Thus NASA is necessary. We must have vision, mission, goals, and objectives: outer space allows us to dream and scheme and to be bigger than we really are.
Go NASA!!!
We love our federal money here in Utah. I don't want to hear these people talk about deficits or federal spending. They want the money spent here. It can't be "Let's cut everyone else".
Lower taxes!
Cut the pork!
(Except MY pork!)
It's amazing how conservatives can simultaneously holler about big government at tea parties, show up at ribbon-cuttings for stimulus-funded projects, and complain about cost-cutting in their own state.
If you complain about this president no matter what he does, don't be surprised if he starts disregarding what you say.
Have they done anything to help President Obama over the past year? They would get a more favorable response on NASA if they hadn't been bashing him the whole time. (Do unto others . . .)
OK geezer -- I've followed the NASA story this year. The entire Florida Congressional Delegation (all of 27 of them -- Republicans and Democrats alike) signed similar letter to President Obama telling him that his NASA plan was foolish and naive. That's Obama's own Democrats telling him this as well! And it's just not florida. It's Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, and other states as well. And do you dare suggest that Obama would make a policy decision this imapctful based on politics and ideology alone? Come now... Could it be true?????
Check the numbers. Each Ares 1 rocket needs 34 billion to finish and then we pay about 500 million per flight. It might fly about 2016. However, NASA can use SpaceX's Dragon for 140 million per flight, and just ~2 billion to speed up development on the manned version (the cargo version begins flight tests in a few months). Thats a HUGE savings! Best yet, Dragon should be ready in 2013, 3 years sooner than Ares 1. And this SpaceX will be able to sell space flights to any country, putting a dent in the trade deficit.
Obama's plan does not pull money away from human space flight, it simply just seems that way because his plan does it cheaper. The layoffs are sad, but mostly it's a job shuffle anyway. NASA is not getting smaller. Plus, NASA is not a welfare organization, its a task organization.
