If Heaps is the QB then i will renew my season tickets.

If the QB competition goes

all the way to the fall that favors Heaps and Lark. They will improve as they get to know the offense better and gain experience.

Last year Nelson looked more like a running QB than a true passer. That has some merit but the offense is really designed for a true passer.

A lot of it is not throwing mistakes. It will be very interesting to see who this works out. If BYU has a potent running game that takes some pressure off of the passing game. Ditto for a decent defense.

ESPN?

I'm sure that ESPN wanted the national draw of the aggies for that game...right?

Too bad we are stuck with the mtn. ESPN would LOVE to have BYU every week! Have they picked up any Utah games?

Re: JRW renewal

That should work, yep the BYU football program can now look forward to a successful 2010 season now that JRW is going to renew his season tickets. Get a life dude. Look at me talking down another lame blogger as if I have room to talk or blog for that matter. Go Cougars, even if you have goof-ball's like me and mister renewal JRW as fans. I hope Riely get's the position he has the skills and the leadership quality needed in a QB. James is a good choice as well both of these guy's have thge maturity to lead the Cougars.

Nelson will have the starting job, always is underrated and always delivers.

ESPN

I agree I hate the mountain! They would definitely put the Utah-BYU game on ESPN if it weren't for the mtn. How long is that stupid contract for?

donovan

it is up to coach bronco mendenhall if he chooses riley nelson fine but there is james lark and jake heaps as well and heaps is number 1 overall quarterback that decided to come to byu like ben olsen and when crowton got fired olsen transfered to ucla we dont want one of those mess ups again so if riley starts for 2 years and heaps starts after that than that should be good but if heaps plays all 4 years than thats fine as well so leave it up to bronco he will make the right decision for this program ok

Agree

that Nelson gets the job, Heaps 2nd and Lark mop up duty. You non-believers will see Riley can throw it pretty well. He's a Steve Young in the making. I wouldnt give away my season tickets just yet.

Sports Guru

It's Nelsons job to lose and I predict he will lose it. Jake Heaps is the future and he will play this year, if he doesn't play this year, this could turn out to be a catastrophe like Ben Olsen. Nelson and Lark are good players but Heaps seems like he has the "it" factor and leadership qualities. Look for Nelson to backup Heaps and Lark to transfer somewhere down the line. Quezada will be a good change up to Unga and will play in a lot of 3rd down situations this season. This is a make or break season for O'neil Chambers he needs to step up and play towards the physical ability he has.

If BYU wants to contend with the SEC teams and ACC teams and the other conferences the clear choice is Jake Heaps. He wasn't rated number one quarterback by the polls for no reason. He is the best quarterback in the country and we don't start him and what does that say about our desire to compete against the over stacked teams like Florida and Alabama.Start the best to be the best.

Jake Heaps is the clear choice for the starting position and I think that for one reason and one reason only. Jake is the number one quarterback and all the land and you don't start him that is like Florida have Tim Tebow and not starting him. How would Florida been as a team without Tim?

Are you Kidding YOURSELF

You should know that Heaps was promised the starting job by coming to BYU. Nelson, you passed your chance on a good team at USU under a great coach. Get used to the pine!

Looks like a long, long, long season.

Re: JRW

Dude.. I hope you don't renew your season tickets. Season tickets are for real fans. Regardless of which QB wins the starting position we look to have a good team and some exciting football to watch in the Fall.

Go Cougars! Scoreboard!

COUGARS3

Riley Nelson will and should be the starter for BYU. He can run and pass fairly well. This kid is a player and if BYU wants to be successful Riley will need to run the offense. If Heaps gets the job then BYU will have a .500 season. If Lark gets the job (which will not happen) BYU wins two or three games. Did anyone see Riley play agains Lark in high school? Riley is a much better football player.

Play more WAC?

Here's hoping BYU can enjoy better coverage of their games, more national exposure, broadcasts with better game calling and production, by playing the tough, nationally recognized teams from the power conferences, such as more teams from ... the WAC???

Kennewick Cougar

Don't forget abt. Jason Munns. He returns from his mission in May, but even tho he misses spring practice, he has the physical tools none of the other qb's have--6'5" 225 lbs., rocket arm...Don't count him out.

Heaps

was the number one HIGH SCHOOL quarterback in all the land. This is different.

Heaps can MAKE IT the same. I say the job is Riley's until someone TAKES it from him by being flat-out AWESOME. If that happens, I can live with it.

Any good coach

Will put the best quarterback on the field. At D1 you get no promises to sign. Too many of you think this is in the bag.

They might even start Nelson half the season then go with Heaps. Bronco will do what is best for the program. He's a "stewardship" guy, and his decision will be in the best interest of the Cougars long-term.

Bob in line

Such good'ol boyism on this blog. So we take a really good high school player and promise him the starting job at a D1 school because????

Seems to me he earned his job at the high school level. He can do the same thing here. Suppose he has a great career at BYU. I suppose the NFL needs to start him just because of what he did at BYU? No.

At all levels you earn it at that level. What you did prior gets your foot in the door. The next step is to earn it once there.

And today is a nut shell. Riley Nelson had the best numbers. Football is a team sport, which means you have to really understand what the other ten players are suppose to be doing. It's called knowing the offense. Riley knows it best and has the advantage.

How many times have we seen gifted athletes struggle for various reasons, and weak athletes who know the offense really well shine. Think Ty Detmer. Mediocre skills but knew the offense and could move it on anyone.

The more I hear the goo about Heaps the more I cringe.
