Oh please!! There are so many variables affecting bird migrations, food sources, mortality rates, fecundity rates, predator populations, etc. that trying to pin any change on any one factor, climatic or otherwise, is almost comical.
I have been an ornithologist for 40 years. This is more of the Church of Climate Change hysteria. How anyone with any kind of scientific background can bear to have their name associated with it is utterly beyond me.
climate-change, what happened to global warming? funny how it has moved from global warming to climat-change...we have to blame someone for something. sad!
Climate change is a fable. Climates always change. Right now, we are colder. Look at the snow folks have been getting. Since we know scientists are untruthful with their facts, you can't trust what they say. Birds, like all other animals, will adjust, or will die off. That is nature. Survival of the strong.
treating man-caused climate change as a proven fact. You must give our giverment experts control of everything or all is lost. "as climate change brings longer and hotter fire seasons, deeper and longer droughts" ... any proof of these claims or merely the "holy" computer model, font of all wisdom?
climate change is real and happening, but many of these birds nest on the ground and since raccoons were introduced to Utah, many of these birds have been decimated. I wonder how this type of element was incorporated into the study.
If you're an ornithologist, as you claim, you would realize that fecundity, mortality, migratory patterns, etc., do not exist as discrete phenomena, but are tied inextricably with the greater ecology in which the species is found. You certainly would be able to discern weather from climate, if you are, indeed, some type of "ologist".
You realize the climate is starting to show signs of dramatic change, but are afraid to admit human causation, because it cannot be proven. The scientist in you desperately wants to utilize your rational, fact-seeking inclinations, because you are above all the and media-driven fear-mongering and bias.
Hope you enjoy the beautiful day.
You folks who made the first few comments, please back up and consider the central point of the article.
It is completely irrelevant what term you use - global warming or climate change. The terms are interchangeable.
Give wildlife biologists the credit they're due. They do take into consideration the other factors impacting bird populations. The fact is that climate is changing far faster than any natural climate change previously observed, and it's having an effect on bird populations.
I do not believe that the science around climate change is settled or that we know the cause.
However, it is known that during the medieval warm period there were prolonged periods of drought in the western United States.
We also know that populations are increasing.
We should really be looking into increasing our water supplies. It seems like every time we want to build new reservoirs we are blocked by some environmental group.
With the recent exposure of "Global Warming/Climate Change/next name to be announced" as the farce and lie that it is, the credibility of that movement is gone. When you try to make a crisis of everything, pretty soon NOTHING is a crisis. A feminist once equated marriage to legalized rape, but in her attempt to demean men and marriage, she diminishes rape, making it out to be an every day event that no one should be concerned about. My point being this, are there issues in the climate? YES. Are they man made and able to be stopped by extreme restrictions on humankind? ABSOLUTELY NOT. But, those who would exploit "climate change" will never stop, but continue to use reasoning as scientific as "Global warming is real!!!! The temperature has risen 20 degrees just since 8 o'clock this morning!!! Run for your lives!!!"
why is it soooo important that we humans be blamed for the horrible phenomenon conjured up to scare us to death? (call it whatever you like: global warming or climate change) the boogeyman is after us and most especially after our money. If these same tragically endangered species could contribue cold, hard cash to the al gores of the world, they'd truly be in danger.
The heading - "Climate Change Harms Birds" is misleading, even false. It should say, "If there is climate change, it may harm birds." If as the saying goes "everyone talks about the weather but no one does anything about it" could it be that man really can't affect the weather. We are puny and even our collective "sins" have little to do with the changing climate. The greatest changes to our climate happened centuries, even millenia ago when there were relatively few inhabitants of this remarkable planet. The climate may very well change (in the 70s Newsweek magazine spoke of the next ice-age) but the ridiculous scare tactics that are being employed today are nothing but a scam to try to weaken the US and other industrial nations.
in this field, seems to be the fear that mankind is responsible for making the planed less hospitable for mankind.
Why is it so hard to admit there are consequences to over-consumption?
Change is scary, but change we must.
I love how everything is tied into Global Warming. Nothing is too trivial to blame on humans.
Climate change? Don't you mean global warming? Oh, that's right, the earth hasn't been warming during the last ten years. Silly me.
Most of us now realize this whole scare has been a big fraud that some have used for their own gain.
Move on, Amy. Pleae use your carbon footprint on a more important and relevant topic.
I can prove we're having global warming. It snowed here SLC Saturday in March. I can't remember it EVER snowing so much in March in my entire life!
Funny how this report from 3 environmentalist organizations is even news worthy. But have to start up the GW religion now that winter is over. It is a tough sale when we are all having cold spells.
Did you know that Utah used to be under water? It was called lake Bonneville. Did you know it was NOT man made global warming that was the cause of it turning into a little tiny lake in comparison? Puny man is not changing anything. The earth has been cooling and warming LONG before we were ever here.
I guess we better all give up our freedoms for climate change. Even though climate change is always changing and will no matter what we do. Maybe these scientists need to study some science and look at the records that show the climate got hotter and colder longer before people were here. Get a real job and stop trying to get taxes raised to support your families.
Give us your money says the scientist or we will call your a murderer of plants and animals. There is too many people making a lot of money on this to think it is purely about saving the environment. I wonder if these scientist would say this if they were not getting money from the Gov't or other groups who get money fromt he Gov't.
Many of the comments made on the Deseret News comment boards relating to climate change are simply embarrassing. It sounds like a grade school playground: why is it called climate change instead of global warming? Scientists are liars. Al Gore is bad. Some commenters make real points, but can't we in general, raise the level of discourse a little?
