Oh dear sir you are too kind. While I sat around in total disbelief, I went over in my mind what could be done with these pirates who have once again made our state look like a bastian of uneducated, self cented white men and a few white women, who behave as though we arent a country of interdependent humans who should be looking out for each other. These people who refuse to believe that we wake up in the morning and with the help of our socialist electrical grid get our news, cook our breakfast, heat our homes, drive on our roads educate our children in our public schools and Universities take our public transportation, depend on our federal aviation laws, stay safe with our socialist police department and our socialist military and pretend we could do this all by our selves without being interdependent. The millions of dollars we will be spending on some of the bills passed in this 2010 legislative session to fight our own govermental laws that make our lives better. Healthcare is a Human Right and a moral issue. We are we are a social society. Spend these millions on dental care for all.
take back Congress
Another hard-hitting commentary. Excellent. It is time to take the state back.
Incivility begets incivility, and I see myself becoming as rude as they are. You have to get everybody to take a step back and chill. A little intellectualism about how to govern would be helpful. But the TP movement (hey, TP, that's funny) is inherently uncouth.
Is this really a "news article"??? It sounds like a political campaign speech at a Democratic party rally.
We live in a republic, thankfully. We have the opportunity to vote for and elect our representatives. There is a great division in opinions in our society, under which lies a huge difference in values. Fundamental values such as abortion and sexual conduct are viewed quit differently. These are the real causes of the division.
This "article" is unfair and simply disparages those who have a different viewpoint than the author. In that sense it is shallow minded. It would be more helpful to talk about differences and recognize that the vast majority of Utahns agree with what is happening in our legislature.
Perhaps that's why it's in the *Opinion* section of the paper.
'WE THE PEOPLE' have given our government away and we have no clue how to get it back. This past legislative session should cement in everybody's psyche that maybe we should expand our minds a scosh. Time to realize that maybe someone who isn't white, male and LDS could be a good public servant.
What the heck was up with that standing ovation for Garn? That was more than I could bear! They did the same for Killpack, hold them up as models of courage. What do our legislators expect us to think of them when they do such things? The ridiculous way they treated the citizenry of Utah aside, the homage they pay to people such as Killpack, Wimmer, and Garn is beyond reproach.
To boot, these private caucuses the legislators have formed, are members of, attend meetings concerning, and openly recruit new legislators in behalf of, ARE OFFENSIVE BEYOND ANYTHING ELSE. Aside from military and security issues, GOVERNMENT BUSINESS SHOULD BE DONE IN PUBLIC ... period ... end of discussion. If they can't do that then they have no business running for public office.
It's all about the caucuses. We keep asking ourselves why we elect and re-elect these out of touch legislators? We don't. The caucus electors do. Get rid of the caucuses, put in primaries and normal Utahns might see who the candidates are before reading about them in the newspaper trying to secede from the union.
Right on.
I laugh every time I hear the legislators lament the fact that the feds are after us. We need to take back the state's rights. Then in the next sentence they impose their will upon the schools, police, fire, etc.
The people need to take back their rights.
Look at what the legislature did this year:
Killed teaching as a profession (this has been in the works for the last decade but by killing retirement, they finally accomplished their goal)
We will now have 50 year old fire men and police officers.
Per pupil funding took a big hit in two ways. They cut funding and also didn't provide funds for incoming students, estimated to be about 11,000.
This is just a small part of the "good" they did this year.
Power to the people.
Wow, John Florez really has anger issues with the Legislature, and can’t see anything good from the recent session. His words about the “desperados riding into town and taking whatever they wanted” sounds more like President Obama and his administration. Granted, the State Legislature’s work wasn’t perfect, but overall I think they did a pretty dang good job.
Steve ... My, aren't you a bright one? Hilarious!
Lifelong Repub ... I'm 53 and take slight offense but you are right. Vouchers was just the beginning, now the retirement. I expect the next move will be Charter or Private schools for all. No teaching degree required there, they could pay minimum wage. Sheldon Killpack and many more legislators are laughing all the way to the bank.
No the legislature is not bringing home the bacon for your paticular desperados. You are just another political hack with your agenda for your "group". Don't worry Obama's got your back.
Utah legislators are no better or worse than other politicians except in this regard, the state is run more responsibly than most. Our unemployment is under 7% and our budget is balanced and there is still money in the rainy day account. All in all a good legislative session.
Kudos to John Florez! My thoughts exactly.
Lifelong Republican...I agree with you.
Yes, you heard me.
As this was in the opinion section of the news, I say well done John Florez.
No offense intended. Just think that by 50 police and fire put their lives at risk long enough. They should be allowed to retire if they choose.
I fear for what my grandkids are going to face in Utah.
Our budget is balanced?????????????? 7%????????? PROVE IT!!!!
with what the Legislature did this year. But then again I have a job and pay taxes. I wonder if those who sit on the message boards of this paper and the Trib all day complain so much because they don't work and are dissastisfied with the Legislature because their welfare checks won't buy them the luxuries "they really deserve?"
@ I'm Happy: Why are you on the board if you have a job and pay taxes?
I'm on here around once a month because when I get all gooey and romantic about mankind, I need a dose of reality about my fellow man. Doesvesky was right, mankind will trade freedom for a crust of bread. I'll continue to trust in myself and God. Government is becoming a monster. Thinking about Costa Rica or India or some other emerging market, the US is toast.
I was starting to think this "States Rights" crusade would really pick up steam.
Thank you to the Legislature for pointing out that *limited* States Rights is a good thing.
