This article summed the problems with the Utah legislature wonderfully, "Lawmakers should avoid writing laws that aim to fix isolated problems."
We have an epidemic of "over-legislation". The existing distracted driver law is sufficient to deal with anyone, including teenage drivers who are recklessly driving while distracted. The new abortion law was also unneeded. This so-called conservative legislature needs to focus more on enforcement and good prosecuting of laws, not laws that try to "socially engineer" every social problem. This slowly erode our freedom to act for ourselves without running into some over-protective law.We don't need "helicopter" legislators treating citizens like children.
Killing public education and making it so NO ONE will want to be a teacher, police officer, or fire fighter is a success?
Wow.
I claim the opposite. This session will go down as one of the worst in the history of our state. Scandals and one of the worst decisions (killing retirement for public employees) will make this one of the most HARMFUL sessions in history.
Congrats legislators. You made history. But so have a lot of other bad guys over the years.
Just keep patting yourselves on the back and get the d-news to cover up your stories and tell you that you did a good job.
Killing education, cutting firefighters and police officers, raising taxes, and then applauding a child molester is NOT a good session.
Right on!
All of you other posters are clueless. The reason why this session was a success is because we are in the worst recession since the great depression and we were somehow able to come out of it relatively unharmed. I know its hard for people like you to people glass-is-half-full, but things could have been much, much worse. If we had the leadership of say, Arizona or California, it most certainly would have been much worse. Utah has been recognized as the best managed in the nation a few times now and we've just witnessed why. You'll thank the lawmakers later when other states are still in the tank and Utah is sitting pretty.
The only people that recognize it as the best managed state are the legislators themselves.
As far as education funding is concerned we are the WORST managed state in the union.
The only thing we lead the country in are message bills (that cost us millions to defend) and building roads before they are needed.
Oh we do a pretty good job clearing snow off the roads as well.
Other than that...
I think the Republicans are going to have to change their, "Your values, your party" billboards.
stop whining. I was there. In the dirty. If you had any idea what the state was facing, from a broader perspective, you would realize how big of a success this session was.
