If Deseret News knew about the incident, why did they cover it up?
Rule #1 - Never go into a hot tub naked with someone when you are married (other than your spouse); and
Rule #2 - Never go into a hot tub naked with someone who is a minor...NEVER!!
These rules seem basic, but I guess you have to spell them out for some people.
What a tangled web we weave when we first practice to deceive.
The lady first blackmailed the guy decades after the incident, while she herself having a "pill porblem". Then now she wants this guy to go down. Guys, just be loyal to your wife and what you believe, and such thing will never happened to you.
What makes us think that since he lied 25 years ago that he will tell the truth about what happened now? This is going to be a soap opera of sorts and I would not be surprised if more women come forward.
Resign and let us enjoy the soap opera without the worry that you are still hiding in public office embarrassing the GOP and the State of Utah.
Dear Cheryl--
What are you trying to do? He really ruined your life massaging you in a hot tub? He offers you money to get on with your life and leave him alone, and you won't. You think dragging him through the mud won't get you just as dirty? Sounds like you are still on the pills and the 150 k has long been spent on your addiction--otherwise why would you see the need to do this? Sounds like he repented. Sounds like you have not.
This upright gentleman is one of the chief opponents of the legislative ethics initiative. Now we know why...
Politicians make me SICK. The IRS now should go after this woman, who apparently received the hush money and see if she reported it as income. If not. slam the freaking cell door on her also.
Jesus loved the sinner,
forgave the adulteress,
forgave the Romans,
forgave the thieves, etc. etc.
but Oy vey!, how he loathed those HYPOCRITES!!!
Regardless of her motives, he made two really, really, really bad judgment calls. He is the one who committed a crime and was never prosecuted. He's the one who paid the hush money. Blame her all you want, but ultimately he is the one responsible for his own mess.
RE:extortionist
Repented? You mean by paying her to be quiet and keeping everything hush-hush? Is that what repentance is to you?
It's extortion. Something that old shouldn't be news now. Can't we all be good Christians and forgive the guy?
She is a pill popping. extortionist, pure and simple. Garn will have to pay the price, but she and her husband should be sent to prison.

Democracts to worse than this, so why is this a story? It happened 25 years ago, and we all make mistakes.
At least Garn is not trying to turn this country into a socialist country.
settlements are not typically tax-able. They are sometimes but this case it can probably be argued (if it was purportedly for emotional distress and to pay for treatment) that it is not.
If older men aren't supposed to mess around with young girls, because it might mess them up for life, why are you so harsh to her, when she in fact has a messed up life, because of it?
If you think she should just be "over it," then why do we care if a consenting 14 year old girls climbs in the hot tub with a married older guy, anyhow?
Because according to you, there is no damage done long term, right?
"..he may have violated election laws..."
How about the fact that he was in a hot tub with a young girl? I would think that should be the main store and the election law should be the least of our concern.
But the again, both crimes have passed the statute of limitations.
The way to look at is this: Kevin Garn, touching or not, should have been on the sex offender registry. And for that, his colleagues in the legislature gave him a stand O. Shameful.
I wonder if she declared the extortion money to the IRS?
If I had that kind of money, I'd pay MY wife to keep quiet too!
