I was in the crowd the night he came back to USU shortly after retiring from profootball. What a night. What a player - and he was only half done. He was everything an athletic role model should be, unlike so many of the athletes kids pick now days. I always admired him for his character as much or more as for his skill and talent.
Thank you sir for your great example and undaunted character. You trully were the captian of your soul and the master of your destiny.
Hopefully we all can have more Merlin Olsen in each of us.
Great article.
For once, a great article by you Rock. He will always be remembered for a wonderful example he was to all of us.
He was a terrific football player, and had great personal integrity.
I had a chance to meet him about 15 years ago, though, and in my experience he was not all that pleasant.
I didn't even know he had cancer. That goes to show you he didn't want any attention on him self. I don't think anybody from the state of Utah has accomplished so much in a variety of endevours. THe world is a little bit worse off without the great Merlin Olsen. He was a true great human being.
God Bless the memory of Merlin Olsen a true quiet unsung hero and a class act worthy of emulation. I enjoyed his acting in Little House on The Prarie and admired his devotion to the church. I am glad that his pain and suffering in this life is now a thing of the past and a great and glorious eternity of peace and happines is now before him.I extend my thoughts and praryers to his family may the blessings and promises of the gospel give you hope and strength and comfort till you meet him again.
I was born in 1967 attended Utah State in 85-86. I listened to Super Bowls so I could hear him. Paid attention to the flowers to see him. Tried to follow him for for over 35 years and still could not get enough of him. Some people I listen to for 5 minutes NOW and I have had too much of them. He will be missed...I am gland that he Cached in my valley for a moment.
