Yeah, we don't need to spend money on roads; they're in such great shape. If only the legislature would leave a little to buy paint so we could distinguish the wandering lanes on I-15 and I-215.
I think its time these same legislators should consider some legislation that will stop this cross trafficking of funds between departments. Once a fund is allocated only the department allocated the funds can use it.
Then this law to allow rampant bonding is just a hidden tax we all are required to pay.
Though road repair is needed, it all doesn't have to be done at once and in the same year. So what did our state do with the bailout funds that Obama gave them for repairs and upgrading existing roads? It was used to balance the budget and fund new costly projects. It gave UTA the funds to go out an buy sections of land to develop and sell. An illegal act by UTA and TRAX, they are not registered as developers or investment companies.
If it is not apparent now that our politicians are out of touch and idiotic, I don't know what it's going to take. They are killing us and they could care less. My vote will go against every one of them this year!
Too bad they didn't spend some of the money on fixing buildings that are currently on campuses rather than building new ones. Modernizing old building is less costly and more environmentally friendly. On a side note, how is it that the Aggies didn't already have an agricultural building?
I do not understand how putting more money in higher education means that they are "out of touch". As a resident of this state I would much rather see an investment in the education of our students than more lanes on I-15.
The buildings are needed, and they can be built now at a discount due to the economy. Sounds like forward-thinking financial management to me, not to mention jobs in construction trades which are badly needed. I'm satisfied with this budget plan.
One thing I have never understood. Why are we not paying more taxes at the pump to fund our roads? It seems like the fairest tax of any that have been implemented. Those that use the roads the most should pay the most. Then, we would not have to dip out of the road construction to fund education.
I like the idea of buying while cheap, but the habit of throwing money at higher ed does nothing in the long term.
USU does have an agriculture building. It was built in the early 1950's. It does not meet OSHA regulations for ventilation. It does not approach meeting seismic codes. It is not handicap accessible and is sited such that handicap access is impossible. In this case it will be cheaper to build than to renovate.
The main reason that a "use tax" is not raised on fuel is that too many people would notice it. It is much easier to lower that tax and sneak the money away from education or building. I agree that it is the right tax but legislators are too afraid of losing an election. It seems they are not very concerned about what is right or wrong. I find that sad.
I wish there were some way to do an education use tax. Then we could get over this corrupt government of ours
