Where are the pictures of these new dorms?

Terry

Idahoan

Having a sink in the hallway seems awkward. Anyone else care to opine?

bedrooms

Are the bedrooms private or shared bedrooms? If they are shared then they need to consider adding another bathroom, at least one. Bathrooms are critical and builders seem to go cheap on them for some reason.

Neighbors complain

The area around 900 East has become a real hazard for pedestrians because of how fast the cars drive and nobody wants to stop to let those on foot exercise their right of way. The neighbors should be complaining about that.

re: bedrooms

If one bathroom for 4 people is enough, then two bathrooms for 6 people is enough. We (4 of us) share one bathroom in our apartment and it's just fine. I've also lived in apartments where 6 people share one bathroom. That's less convenient, but nobody ever had an accident in the hallway. Heritage Halls has 1 bathroom for 6 people, too, so giving 2 baths for 6 in the dorms is a step up from what Heritage Halls has. 3 baths would be overkill and take away from the amount of living space that could be provided.

re: Idahoan

Actually, living in student housing it is VERY practical to have a sink outside of the bathroom. I've lived in apts where the sink is inside the bathroom and apts where just the tub/toilet is inside and the sinks/vanity are right outside in the hall. Outside works WAY better because you can be brushing teeth, combing hair, shaving, or whatever while someone is showering. Makes it a lot easier getting ready for church on Sunday morning or getting ready for school/work/dates when everyone is getting ready at the same time, because otherwise you would have to wait for the person in the shower to do all those other things, (or be REALLY awkward and go in while they're showering... definitely not an option).

I hope that "expensive maintenance" wasn't the only reason for tearing down the dorm-style buildings as the article suggests. I hope that there was consideration for the fact that the dorm-style design has a negative psychological impact on students. Studies can be found that prove that the proposed type of housing is much more conducive to student health. I am glad that BYU students are no longer suffering the poor living conditions of Deseret Towers that I experienced.

YAY!

for ADA compliant!! We need more of that in BYU approved housing.

Hi-res photos please

I don't know how some of you can see sinks, I can barely read the diagram online. I notice the URL includes midres, could DN allow full-size/hi-res when "click"ing to enlarge?

Architect

What a horrible design. I love how the Deseret News called this a sleek new design. There is nothing new, or sleek about this design and it highlights the problems with recent LDS architecture.

dear anonymous--mental illness from living in the dorms!! good grief, do you know how many people have graduated from college after living in dorms? clear across this country and into europe, that's who.... that is a ridiculous idea. my whole college career, i longed to live in the dorms and when i was on campus, deseret towers was the top of the line! yeh, that make me old, but i'm not stupid yet. you need to travel more, it will open your mind.

and a note to 'architect' have you been out of utah county? that's what dorms look like in the hallowed halls of new england schools. it's not lds architecture, although most of the settlers of utah originated in new england. it's classic american style. no matter what the story deseret news is running, somebody always puts a downer on the lds. give it a break, pleazzzzzzzzzzz. it's demeaning to the lds and makes you look dim. remember what thumpers mother said? if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Class of '96

Darn them to heck! I lived in DT for 2+ years. Long live Ma Bell! When they tore down the towers, they tore down the last remnants of my memories at BYU! They have systematically demolished and replaced every building I was ever in on campus. NOOOOOOOooooooooo!!!!!!
