3,000 tons of depleted, radioactive uranium 'deposited' into Utah. That wouldn't bother me if it didn't have the life-span of 4.4 billion years.

Many claim this is 'safe' and 'less than uranium found in nature.

Ok, I'll bite. If this is SO safe, why are they burying it?

HEAL Utah always lies...

Here we go again. Now HEAL UT is trying to say that the US Department of Energy doesn't know how to take samples and characterize waste.

I'm glad we have state and federal regulators that don't fall for all of HEAL Utah's lies.

HEAL sure tries everything to make what is Class A not look like Class A.

It will be interesting to see who is bamboozled by HEAL and their hired gun liars (statistics experts).

Go away

Energy Pollution is all about lies and concealed facts. They consistently say one thing and do another.

Go away and take your pollution with you!

How to lie with facts...

Groups like HEAL Utah will go find all of the numbers they can.

Then they take the biggest numbers they can find and divide that number by the smallest number they can find.

That will give then the biggest number for an "analysis."

Then they will say that number is too big.

This will be mostly a test to see how well educated the average Utahn is.

If Utah falls for this, we really do have problems with our public education system.

Energy Solutions

Will make the BIG $$$ right now to bury it.

Years from now,
and many more years from now...

Who will still be around to attend and protect it from terrorists??
(hint: NOT Energy Solutions)

Our children, and our childrens children was be sad we allowed this to happen to THEM!!!

Silva

The Department of Energy sent us reprocessed uranium. A material they know violates Energy Solutions license. And Energy Solutions would of taken it.

2 bits

It sounds very simple to me. If it's not class-A waste (lowest level) then it has to go elsewhere.

The definition of class-A waste is not ambiguous.

Storing class A waste does NOT violate the license. If this is class A they can take it. If not they can't. What's so hard about that?

SFF

Depleted uranium is harmful, and it gets much more harmful after 100,000 years. Energy Solutions won't be around to monitor this problem, and if we continue to be so stupid as to produce this highly radioactive waste, the human race may not be around very long, either. We cannot continue to contaminate our earth with byproducts of the nuclear industry which cannot be neutralized by any known technology.
HEAL Utah is right on the mark. Good for them.

HEAL doesn't pass smell test

This group of anti-nuclear energy wackos insist that the depleted uranium gets additional testing, and before the results are even in of the tests they demand they jump the gun and speculate results. Very fishy indeed. Hmmmmm.

Wow

Slowdeath

It is a sad situation when some of our most beautiful states become depositories for hazardous waste of this nature. Utah was/is also a repository for the chemical warfare poisons. So now not only do we have to put up with the rot of city life, if we try to leave and live in a natural environment we have the rich business yahoo's sticking this nasty stuff in the lower population locations. Somehow we need to try and give our children a chance for a better life on this earth.

ABBO 2012

of course BO's energy department is unclear about waste. they're unclear about everything. How can BO promote nuclear enegery as he rightfully wants to do and still appeal to the far left fringe that make up his base? It's a quandry he has no idea how to deal with.

Hmmm

I think it's pretty ridiculous that anti-nuclear activists would question the Department of Energy. It seems like they are afraid the test won't yield what they want so they're trying to change the parameters.

RE: SFF

I agree with you! We cannot continue to contaminate our earth with byproducts, such as CO2 emissions from cars and other forms of power plants.

The truth of the matter is that nuclear power provides the most power wattage with the least amount of waste.

Voters should pay attention

This is perfect to illustrate the Energy Crisis in our Nation.

Cherilyn Eagar candidate for Senate is a firm supporter of the Nuclear Power industry, so firm she wants to continue and open Yucca Mtn, which is down wind of Utah.

We need to replace or not elect any legislator or candidate that does not pledge to end the oil based economy, and to force those producing nuclear or toxic waste to keep that waste where it is produced.

Who received all the high paying jobs and economic benefits and false profits (not all expenses were paid, external expenses put on to public) IN THIS CASE IT WAS SOUTH CAROLINA, NOT UTAH. So let SOUTH CAROLINA KEEP THE WASTE!!!!!!!!

ELECT ONLY THOSE WHO PLEDGE TO END THE OIL BASED ECONOMY AND TO PASS LEGISLATION MAKING ALL EXTERNAL COST BE PAID FOR AT TIME OF PRODUCTION.

someone's asleep at the wheel

The missing point in this story (which, funnily enough, the Trib covered, for those of you who like to mix it up) is that HEAL gave its report to Herbert *before* it made it public and *before* the state began sampling the drums. Seems like the Gov took the issues raised in HEAL's report seriously enough to wake up and tell the state to do their own analysis. Why HEAL, and not our regulators, had to sound the alarm is my question.

In March of last year the DOE classified Depleted Uranium as class a. Before that, it was unclassified because it became hotter unlike regular by products (it was temporarily classified as a in 2006).

This is the DOE and Energy Solutions trying to take advantage of Utah. Yucca flats was built to take this material, but it was stopped until a study could be done. This was a backdoor ploy to get rid of material that should be classified as class c. The highest level.

If our legislature wants a fight with the Feds, this should be it.

So Utah Republican

Are you sure RE: SFF? What about the toxic radioactive waste?

I agree with your other statement, and we need to force producers to pay the external costs (bad air, cost of health problems, cost of nuke waste storage and security) associated with the power produced, once this happens Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Wave energy is much much cheaper.

Time to stop subsidizing the old power producers and let them pay their way, instead of place the burden and payment for external costs on the public, while they make Trillions.

Please try to get your facts right before you post your arguments. Though you may think you can right anything on these comment boards without some one noticing that is not the case.

First the highest level of nuclear by products is that of fuel rod which was supposes to be deposited at Yucca 'Mnt.'

Oh well at least you stopped going posting the lie about TMI causing miscarriages. That being said I guess one can say that you are improving. On the other hand I think with a little more due diligence on your part you could some day make a post that I will not have to correct.

RE: Jfarmer9

Is the Nevada test site different than Yucca flats?

Lauren Milone of the DOE said the Nevada Test Site is being excluded until they conduct a statewide environmental impact statement. There is depleted uranium already stored at the old test site. Nevada's politicians fought it before it was loaded on the train. A google search will tell people who is correct.

To much information miscarriages?
