I'm impressed with the preparation of the Chilean infrastructure and with the relative calmness of the people of Chile. It is hard to imagine an 8.8 magnitude eathquake and I take this event as one more reminder that we need to prepare locally for such an eventuality. How would Salt Lake City fair in an 8.8 situation?

ok, the headline "Quake was among strongest ever recorded" raises a question, what are the top 15 recorded quakes? Anybody know?
It would take you less than one minute to find that on wikipedia. Less time than it took you to type the question... ;)
The worst ever recorded was in the same area in 1960
I am a physician and would like to go down and help. As a doctor, or has a rubble sorted, don't really care. Anybody else interested? Suggestions about who to contact. I'll be glad to pay my way, but would be nice to have a friendly Brother or Sister meet me and give a bit of help getting started!
