And this surprises us WHY?
Common sense, sensitivity, anything just, ethical and moral has absolutely NO appeal to this state's legislature! Common sense, sensitivity, justice, ethics, and morals do not pay and our leaders only jump when lobbyists pay!
All the weepers should also recognize that business in the State of Utah provides most of the tax revenue to fund the other good things that are important. Businesses do not receive a preferential property tax reduction that homeowners receive. They are taxed in several area in which homeowners are not taxed. It only makes good sense for a business, even one employing fewer than 50 employees, to provide accomodation for nursing mother employees. In many instances, a business employing more than 50 persons may have several locations, some of which will likely be of a size that would not make this possible. Let's not get all bent out of shape over a good idea, that does not deserve to be punishable by law if it is not possible to provide in accordance with the new law.
I dont' see the point of this bill? If I hire a mom that needs to nurse and I love her as a worker, you're darned right I'm going to let her do whatever needs to be done.
What a stupid bill! I nursed all my children and took time out in the restroom at work to pump breast milk in privacy. Good grief, mothers have been managing this for years in and out of the workplace, and will continue to manage with or without a law. What a waste of time at a time when we have so many serious issues to be addressed.
I was just wondering if Rep. Johnson intends to breast feed the baby she is producing for her two gay friends because she considers breast feeding so important? I'll keep out of her life if she keeps out of my business.
is a slap in the face to most Utahns. Her agenda and actions are an embarassment to the state.
My employer told me to go pump milk on a toilet and that if I wanted to work, nursing might be something I have to give up. My husband was fired and I am the only one working.
I support the bill and according to fox 13, the was not a mandate to employers, but a simple request to help provide space and time. If the employer cannot, they don't have to.
BTW, 24 states have this. Utah only preaches to love families. I would bet that if men could breatfeed things would be different.
I don't know why anybody's upset about this. We all know that most of the legislators are Christians. Presumably they're just following Jesus' famous admonition to "love thy local corporation as thyself, most especially if they treat thee to lunch and contribute mightily to thy campaign fund."
I feel sorry for the woman who fed "all her children" in the bathroom. Staph, Strep, E Coli, and the list goes on. I wouldn't want to eat my food in a bathroom.
I am glad they got some common sense in this. I work in the health care system. Would YOU be willing to wait to be seen in and ER at the hospital, because the nurse on duty is busy nursing?
If I can not have the help I need to do my duty to patients, because they are nursing, then maybe it is time to find another to work in her place. That bleeding or injured patient DOES need to be helped-NOW. Not later when she is done nursing.
Breastfeeding isn't indecent and shouldn't be made so by banishing mothers who are pumping milk to dirty toilet stalls.
Utah should be at the forefront of such legislation! We in Utah supposedly value mothers, and value what mothers do for their children. All this bill says is that businesses employing 50 or more workers should allow mothers to take paid or unpaid break time to express milk, and if possible, provide a clean, private location for that activity. This really IS a question of plain, human decency!
I hope the mothers of the male committee members who voted this bill down tell their boys how completely ashamed they are of them!
Women need to be given a little more credence and respect. If companies gave a little more thought in how they treated women, we would see a lot less poverty and crime in our society. Just think if part time working mothers were given retirement, benefits, and paid days off and a daycare stipend. Can you imagine the heightened standard of living these children would experience? Most of the poor and uncared for in our society are working mothers. We need to do more. This bill would have given women more respect for the dual role they fulfill, as well as encourage a healthier diet for their child. The rejection of this very mild bill is yet another two huge steps back for our state.
Women should nurse or pump in bathrooms? YUCK! Mothers shouldn't have a clean place to go on their WORK BREAK??? No one is asking employers to provide for special time off or extra breaks for nursing mothers - they are asking employers to try to provide a clean place to nurse or pump breast milk. It isn't a mandate or a law, and if it is so "common sense" then why does the US rank so very poorly on support policies for breastfeeding women?
Apparently the US, and Utah, is lacking common sense!
It takes 10-15 minutes to pump milk every 4-5 hours - surely this isn't too much to ask for a clean, private place to do it (not a bathroom).
C'mon Utah, get with the program.
Seriously?! This is incredible--I thought that of all the states, Utah would be the first to advocate for families! A woman shouldn't have to give up breastfeeding to be able to retain her job, and she certainly shouldn't have to breastfeed in a bathroom (you might not have noticed, but THEY SMELL REALLY BAD most of the time)!
It's too bad that men don't breastfeed, or they might have had a little more empathy here. And in my books, taking care of a child's health by giving it the proper nourishment is just as important as taking care of somebody's health as part of your job. So, job vs. family--is that what it comes down to?
This legislation's decision truly marks Utah as hypocrites. We proclaim family matters as foundational to our governing, unless of course they are inconvenient and involve a breast. Humiliating!
