Its a shame Lan Beattie is not running for Governor against Gary "the Marlboro Man" Herbert.
I'm not saying don't use the fund but I think that it is misnamed. It should not be called "rainy day" fund but rather should be emergency fund and used as a last resort.
If this isn't a time when they should use the rainy day fund ... I don't know when they'll ever be one...
I never actually thought that I would agree with Lane Beatty but I do. We will become a laughing stock if we don't fund education.
The legislature will most likely use half of the Rainy Day fund this year. All I can say is thank goodness they didn't act like every other state legislature and use the whole thing last year. Other states are in serious trouble because they used all of their savings last year and so have to make tremendous cuts/debt this year.
It is far better to never use the rainy day fund so our State can have a high bond rating.
I don't agree that government should take our money and then put it in the bank. If they are going to tax us, they should at least use the money rather than take our interest. I can think of no better use of money in these difficult times than to fund grade school kids and college students. I'm surprised that governor Hebert and some legislators are more interested in supporting tobacco products.
This is not a rainy day... as long is there are other possibilities we should look at them. Of course we are in trouble but not too long ago we reaped in good fortune didn't anyone think this isn't going to last. The step backwards really isn't a step backwards it just something we need for a reality check. Fact is we have to look at all options and that rainy day fund should be saved until it is the last resource. I don't see that we have looked at all possibilities.
