Lay off administrators instead!
i live in riverton and have a child in the district, and i would pay $100:00 per kid to keep the teachers in work. and the money they make in utah. we are in trouble in this country. its not them and us. it is just us.
NO MORE TAXES! Welcome to life teachers. People all around you are getting laid off or having their salaries cut and none of us have the option to say make the people pay more so I can keep my job. There is no room in our lives for more tax increases. Enough is enough! Jordan school District is poorly managed and that has to change. I urge every voter in the district to be ready to vote this entire school board out when the opportunity arises.
Entry level teachers make less than $20K. Superintendent makes $237K. Could probably save a few jobs by trimming at the top. But this isn't really about the "kids" it's about money otherwise they would do that. Kids are a "hot button" issue. So they get drawn into the "we have to do something for the kids" argument. Lawmakers know this and use this as a stepping stone to raise taxes. Sure they are in denial now... but they will raise taxes. Maybe we should just borrow and print money for ever. Someone has to be cut... Government has way too many programs. And that's reality.
I think its against the rules to proclaim yourself the "voice of reason". I believe a 3rd party has to give you the nick-name and then somebody else has to accept it before you can call yourself that.
A society that wants to whittle away education is doomed.
Maybe if teachers spent more time teaching ethics and explaining the dangers of greed, then this country wouldn't be in the mess that it is in.
We need to stop preaching liberal hate messages and get back to the basics.
50 bucks says Frodge is a union rep. 50 more bucks says she makes more money than all the teachers in her district. 50 more bucks say the teachers won't suggest
union reps and administrators should have their pay cut.
Teachers make good money for working 9 months out of the year. They are also the biggest group of complainers in the state. Times are hard, you don't see the rest of us demanding to have a job when there is no money to pay for it.
Taking more money from me right now will hurt me and my family. Do not raise my taxes, I can't afford it.
Cutting education kills the Utah economy for the future. The schools are awful and underfunded as it is. Mismanaged? Yeah, probably. But will taking more money from them solve the problem? We already spend next to last per pupil. Pack em deep and teach em cheap.
I have a HS student in Canyons, and its bad enough already. In Jordan, add 4 more per classroom - thats an "average" - which already have upwards of 40 kids. Then take away prep periods. Your kids are going to see lots of Disney and learn nothing. But you've saved enough for a couple of Big Macs, so no worries, right?
I agree with you completely. The school system is a model of inefficiency. We need to hire some principals and adminstrators with some business back-ground and try to run the schools with a flavor of competition.
Many of you want to inflict pain on the teachers, that is fine, grind your axe for whatever reason. The bottom line is that getting rid of 250 teaching positions will impact the education of your children. Rail on the teachers all you want, the children are the ones that will pay the price.
Everyone besides teachers is getting laid off? Really? I thought the economy was recovering and there were less unemployed than last year. I guess you got laid off and are now bitter and wanting everyone else in the world to be laid off.
Also, did you ever consider that teachers went into teaching because the chances of being laid off are much smaller than the private sector. Teachers have exchanged high pay for job stability- and now they don't have that.
You private sector people are the dumb ones- you risk your career for high-reward and high-risk jobs. Just because teachers have chosen to follow a low-pay low risk job doesn;t make them worse than you.
Public education is a unionized, governmental, bureaucratic monopoly. And it functions just exactly like I would expect such an institution to function. Horribly. We had a chance several years ago to break up the monopoly with the voucher program that would have allowed parents some choice where there children went to school. This would have created competition. But the teachers unions and other left-wingers shot the program down. The last thing in the world they want is competition. And who could blame them? Competition would quickly reveal what a terrible job they are doing at educating our kids. And it has nothing to do with a lack of money. It has everything to do with how the money the do receive is spent. And since they have no competition or accountability, they spend the money teaching kids to be good little PC robots.
To the teachers of JSD, QUIT. Obviously your patrons don't value you or respect what you do. Have courage to leave your district and move to a state where they value education. Yes, many states are hurting for education money but at least the people there still value education as important and that teachers need respect.
The only way you will get better treatment is to leave JSD and Utah. Once you are gone the patrons will realize the value of having good-quality teachers- since you'll all be gone.
TEA!
I am a 26 year old white man who is taxed enough already. Even with the green energy tax credits and deductions each year I barely manage to even get myself into the 17-19.5% tax bracket.
Meaning I pay to the State and Federal government close to 1/5 of all my earnings. I don't ask for any food stamps, housing assistance or anything of that nature. So what is my crime to deserve so much be robbed from me?
No kids.
So that brings me to my next question......
why can't parents be more fiscally responsible
and learn that it is their responsible to pay for their children's education. I don't mind helping out a little for students who score a 3.0 GPA or higher.....because they will likely be a good return on investment for everyone involved.
But for you couch potato parents and your lazy children with bad grades 2.9 or lower you can pay more taxes.
Im taxed enough already.
Obviously the school board just "rubber stamps" everything the district bosses want. How about if the district administration gets their pay cut to below 6 figures?
JSD citizens need to take back their school district.
Recall petitions for the school board?
re: "Eric" @12:17 I also agree that taxes SHOULD NOT be raised, and agree that its WAY PAST TIME that the teachers (and their union)took on the ridiculous salary issues at the district office! Teachers at least DO SOMETHING. Sorry, I have no idea what an administrator does for 237k per year!!
I agree with those calling for making cuts at the top. Good teachers are hard to find and you need to encourage them to stay or your district suffers. Why does the superintendent need to make 200k?
Maybe someone can answer this for me. Does the Jordon School Board have the same number of people on it as before the split? If so, WHY?
I just can believe how much money the Superintendent makes and he takes 10% cut unbelieveable. we can see with our eyes close where the problem. we need to clean and sweeo this house ASAP.
I live in the boundaries of the Jordan School District and believe, as most people do, that a modest tax increase is reasonable. We are speaking about $10 - $15 dollars a month. Our children's education is more important than going out to eat one extra time each month.
Getting rid of the high paid administrators makes no sense. The JSD might save $1M by getting rid of several valuable administrators and still have a $29M shortfall. The salaries of the senior district administrators are in line with other districts and less than Granite. Some administrative trim would help but getting rid of the Superintendent will not put a dent in the shortfall.
How about having families pay for their kids fieldtrips? How about having them supply their own crayons, pencils, pens, etc. We moved here from a top 10 school district in the nation and I am appalled at the education system here. I should say that we also paid 3x the property tax that we do here but that district spent almost $5000 per pupil per year. The Jordan district is at 1200, Canyons at 2200---why can't the state just have an equal expenditure per student?
